Article Synopsis
  • Post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a common condition that occurs after deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the legs, but its reported incidence varies widely due to inconsistent diagnostic criteria.
  • The review developed four standardized diagnostic criteria for PTS to refine its incidence and severity reporting: proven thrombotic event, minimum 24-month follow-up, validated assessment score, and evidence of worsening venous insufficiency.
  • After analyzing 33 studies, the review found that the incidence of mild to moderate PTS was 7-36%, consolidating to 23-36% when using the Villalta scale, with severity plateauing at 24 months post-DVT.
