This study aimed to reveal a new dimension of allergy profiles in the general population by using machine learning to explore complex relationships among various cytokines/chemokines and allergic diseases (asthma and atopic dermatitis; AD). We examined the symptoms related to asthma and AD and the plasma levels of 72 cytokines/chemokines obtained from a general population of 161 children at 6 years of age who participated in a pilot birth cohort study of the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS). The children whose signs and symptoms fulfilled the criteria of AD, which are mostly based on questionnaire including past symptoms, tended to have higher levels of the two chemokine ligands, CCL17 and CCL27, which are used for diagnosis of AD.

Psychiatric disorders including depression and anxiety comprise a broad range of conditions with different symptoms. We have developed a mouse model of depression/anxiety in mice deficient in the St3gal4 gene. In this study, we performed a comparative analysis of urinary volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in St3gal4-deficient (St3gal4-KO) and wild-type mice using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and we screened 18 putative VOCs.

This Letter presents a stable polyp-scene classification method with low false positive (FP) detection. Precise automated polyp detection during colonoscopies is essential for preventing colon-cancer deaths. There is, therefore, a demand for a computer-assisted diagnosis (CAD) system for colonoscopies to assist colonoscopists.

Side-chain derivatives of eurotiumide A, a dihydroisochroman-type natural product, have been synthesized and their antimicrobial activities described. Sixteen derivatives were synthesized from a key intermediate of the total synthesis of eurotiumide A, and their antimicrobial activities against two Gram-positive bacteria, methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant (MSSA and MRSA), and a Gram-negative bacterium, , were evaluated. The results showed that derivatives having an iodine atom on their aromatic ring instead of the prenyl moiety displayed better antimicrobial activity than eurotiumide A against MSSA and .

Article Synopsis
  • - Recent findings show that inhaling granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) may effectively treat mild to moderate autoimmune pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (aPAP), prompting the need for accurate measurement of GM-CSF autoantibodies (GMAb) to determine treatment eligibility.
  • - A new high-performance GMAb testing kit was developed, significantly minimizing nonspecific binding in tests and demonstrating perfect predictive ability in distinguishing aPAP patients from healthy individuals with a specific cutoff value.
  • - Validation of the testing kit showed impressive results with 97.6% specificity and 100% sensitivity in a larger sample group, confirming its effectiveness for diagnosing aPAP and differentiating it from other lung conditions

The TRPC5 ion channel is activated upon depletion of intracellular calcium stores, as well as by various stimuli such as nitric oxide (NO), membrane stretch, and cold temperatures. TRPC5 is abundantly expressed in the central nervous system where it has important neuronal functions. In the chick retina, TRPC5 expression was shown to be restricted to amacrine cells (ACs) and Müller glial cells, although its expression was also observed in the ganglion cell layer (GCL) in displaced ACs, as determined by their characteristic cell morphology.

Introduction: Early development of the human placenta remains poorly understood due to the lack of proper model systems. Previous reports have demonstrated that human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) treated with bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) can differentiate into extraembryonic tissues as useful models of the early stage of trophoblast (TB) differentiation. In our previous study, we optimized the culture conditions of hiPSC-derived TB lineages, but the differentiated cells were heterogeneous.
