Rice blast fungus (Magnaporthe oryzae) has ten histidine kinases (HKs), one histidine-containing phosphotransfer protein (HPt), and three response regulators (RRs) as putative components of the two-component signal transduction system (TCS). Here, we constructed knockout mutants of two putative RR genes (MoSSK1, MoSKN7) and a RR homolog gene (MoRIM15) to analyze the roles of TCS in environmental adaptation and pathogenicity. The DeltaMossk1 strain had increased sensitivity to high osmolarity and decreased sensitivity to fludioxonil.

Bone marrow transplantation can lead to osteogenic repair of intractable bone conditions. A novel extraction procedure for stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) termed sequential SBSE was developed. Compared to conventional SBSE, sequential SBSE provides more uniform enrichment over the entire polarity/volatility range for organic pollutants at ultra-trace levels in water. Sequential SBSE consists of a SBSE performed sequentially on a 5-mL sample first without modifier using one stir bar, then on the same sample after addition of 30% NaCl using a second stir bar.

We report unique MRI abnormalities seen in a patient with Tolosa-Hunt syndrome (THS). A 60-year-old woman was admitted for left eye symptoms, including periorbital pain, numbness around the left eyebrow, blurred vision, delayed light reflex and impairment of abduction. Fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2)-apatite composite layers were formed on anodically oxidized titanium screws to improve bone-screw interface strength and to reduce pin tract infection rate through enhanced skin tissue healing in external fixation. Fusarium Tri4 encodes a key cytochrome P450 monooxygenase for hydroxylation of trichodiene early in the biosynthesis of trichothecenes. In this study, we established a system for screening for inhibitors of trichothecene biosynthesis using transgenic Saccharomyces cerevisiae expressing Tri4. For easy evaluation of the TRI4 activity, trichodiene-11-one was used as a substrate and the formation of 2alpha-hydroxytrichodiene-11-one was monitored by HPLC.

We report on a 54-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis who had severe femoral nerve palsy affected by a distended synovium in the hip joint. Surgical exploration demonstrated a perforation of the iliopectineal bursa connecting with the hip joint. The patient fully recovered from femoral nerve palsy after surgery.

Background Context: Lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration (DD) precedes degenerative diseases of the lumbar spine. Various factors in addition to normal aging are reported to be associated with DD, and recently atherosclerosis and risk factors for cardiovascular diseases (cardiovascular risk factors) have received much attention; however, the links between these risk factors and DD are unclear.

Bifenazate is a novel carbazate acaricide discovered by Uniroyal Chemical (now Chemtura Corporation) for the control of phytophagous mites infesting agricultural and ornamental crops. Its acaricidal activity and that of its principal active metabolite, diazene, were characterized. Bifenazate and diazene had high toxicity and specificity both orally and topically to all life stages of Tetranychus urticae and Panonychus citri.

Among the conservatively treated patients with obstetrical paralysis after delivery in the vertex presentation, cross reinnervation sometimes occurs in the course of their recovery and co-contraction of multiple muscles impairs smooth upper limb motion. Such co-contraction of the biceps and the triceps inhibits normal elbow motion, making it impossible to use the elbow effectively in daily activities, despite adequate strength in these muscles. To overcome biceps/triceps co-contraction, we performed intercostal nerve transfer to the musculocutaneous nerve for three patients of age 11 months, 6 years and 9 years, respectively, and to the motor branches of the triceps for two patients of age 4 and 14 year-old, respectively.

The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of autologous uncultured bone marrow-derived mononuclear cell transplantation in large full-thickness cartilage regeneration. After fixing with a hinged external fixator, the entire surface of the left tibial plateau was resected and large full-thickness cartilage defects were formed in 48 rabbits. Fusarium graminearum was engineered for expression of enhanced green fluorescent protein gene (egfp) as a reporter regulated in a manner similar to Tri5, a key pathway gene in trichothecene biosynthesis. Using the transgenic fungus, it was found that the reporter gene was induced to express in aerial hyphae developed on trichothecene noninducing medium YG solidified by agar. Unexpectedly, the transcriptional activation of egfp was markedly suppressed by adding NaCl that does not significantly affect fungal growth.

Our objective was to examine the technique of regenerating cartilage tissue from bone marrow-derived cells by three-dimensional (3D) culture using the rotating wall vessel (RWV) bioreactor.
