Applicability of the endotoxin test to diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis combined (DTaP) vaccines was examined. We found some DTaP vaccines that strongly interfered with Limulus amoebocyte lysate (LAL) activity of endotoxin without affecting lethal activity of endotoxin in D-galactosamine-treated mice. LAL activity that was interfered in such vaccines increased apparently after the treatment with phosphate buffer at 4 degrees C for a week.

The primary endpoint, the recovery ratio of 12-h urine pooled after oral administration, could be evaluated in six of the eight patients finally gathered, and the mean value was 30.1 +/- 5.

Recently, several studies have reported that treatment of cancer cells with PPARgamma ligands induces cell differentiation and apoptosis, suggesting a potential application as chemopreventive agents against carcinogenesis. However, contradictory results have been reported with regards to the biologic role of PPARgamma in carcinogenesis.

Slow evaporation of solvents afforded 1:1 and 2:1 complexes between Ph(2)IBF(4) and 18C6 as stable crystals, depending on the conditions. X-ray crystal structures of these complexes indicated that each iodine atom contacts with the three adjacent oxygen atoms of 18C6 through two hypervalent secondary bonding and a weak interaction.

Efficacy of CHO cell clustering assay was, accordingly, evaluated using purified PT treated with graded concentrations of formaldehyde at 37 degrees C for 24h. The formaldehyde-treated PT was shown to lose CHO cell clustering activity to the level of 0.

Background/purpose: We investigated the molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis in the biliary epithelium in patients with pancreaticobiliary maljunction.
Methods: Point mutations of the K- ras gene and the p53 gene, and the overexpression of p53 gene products were examined in the cancerous and noncancerous biliary epithelium of 37 patients with pancreaticobiliary maljunction, with or without biliary dilatation.
Results: In the gallbladder epithelium of 5 patients with pancreaticobiliary maljunction associated with biliary carcinoma, K- ras gene mutations were detected in 3 (60%), p53 gene mutations in 3 (60%), and the overexpression of p53 gene products in 4 (80%), while in the bile duct epithelium of these patients, these features were found in 2 of 3 (66.
2-Amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP) is one of the most abundant heterocyclic amines contained in cooked meat and fish, and induces aberrant crypt foci (ACF), putative preneoplastic lesions of the colon, and colon cancers in male rats when administered orally. As has been reported previously, F344 rats are susceptible to induction of ACF by PhIP, while ACI rats being relatively resistant. Approximately one-fourth of ACF induced by PhIP in F344 rats are dysplastic; exhibiting lesions with structural distortion of the crypt, decrease of goblet cells, nuclear stratification and enlargement of nuclei.

In particular, the effect of DHEA on carcinogenesis has not been fully characterized. We undertook this study to determine whether DHEA has a chemopreventative effect on the precursors of colon cancer in a murine model of azoxymethane (AOM)-induced aberrant crypt foci (ACF).

The molecular mass of the protein was 490 kDa and it was composed of two 188-kDa subunits. Three internal amino acid sequences obtained by digestion of the protein with lysylendopeptidase showed high similarity to those of Bombyx mori Vg, supporting the purified blue protein to be vitellogenin.

We attempted to search for the factor of DTaP vaccines possibly contributing to the enhanced local reaction by using the mouse hind paw swelling reaction. Mice were immunised intramuscularly with DTaP vaccine twice at 1-month interval and were challenged their hind paw with one of the antigens of DTaP vaccine 2 weeks later.

Methods: We describe an improved technique for esophagojejunostomy by functional end-to-end anastomosis with linear stapling devices.
The pyrogen test in rabbits has been replaced by the bacterial endotoxin test. The endotoxin test, however, showed a considerable discrepancy with pyrogenicity and was, therefore, assumed to have an efficacy limitation in directly predicting harmful biological effects of endotoxin. We developed a sensitive in vitro assay method by making use of tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) induction in RAW264.

The method involves ester exchange of (Z)-2-acetoxyvinyl-lambda3-iodanes with methanol in the presence of triethylamine. alpha-lambda3-Iodanyl ketones react with a variety of nucleophiles such as halides, thiols, phosphines, phosphinic acids, and phosphates, under the conditions which produce alpha-functionalized carbonyl compounds probably via an S(N)2 pathway.

We examined bacterial DNA in pure cholesterol stones to clarify the mechanism of initiation or promotion of the formation of cholesterol gallstones.
Methods: We examined 69 gallstones (30 brown pigment stones, 21 pure cholesterol stones, and 18 mixed cholesterol stones).
