Congenital transverse deficiency of the tibia and fibula: a report of two cases.

We report two similar, but unrelated, patients with congenital bilateral partial deficiencies of the tibia and fibula associated with intact feet. In both patients, the tibia and fibula were absent on initial radiographs, while the femur and the tarsal bones were well developed and there was bilateral teratologic dislocation of the hips. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies suggested the presence of cartilaginous remnants of the tibia and fibula.

We show that bone marrow (BM) CD34+ progenitor cells from rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients have the capacity to support spontaneous transformation of peripheral blood B cells. CD34+ cells purified from BM blood from eight RA patients and eight osteoarthritis (OA) patients were expanded with granulocyte/macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) for 4-6 weeks. Characteristics of hydrogen sulfide removal in a carrier-packed biological deodorization system.

The relationship between the characteristics of carriers in a carrier-packed biological deodorization (CPBD) reactor and the efficiency of H(2)S removal was studied. From the result of a deodorization experiment using three different carriers (each of which obtained a high level of H(2)S removal), the best carrier was cylindrical and the surface and inside of the carrier had macro pores (about 1mm in diameter). To identify and characterize the SYT-SSX fusion proteins in synovial sarcomas, we developed two polyclonal antibodies against the N-terminal part and for the C-terminal part of the SYT-SSX2 protein. Specificity was demonstrated on COS-7 cells transfected with two subtypes of SYT-SSX fusion genes, SYT-SSX1 and SYT-SSX2. Both antibodies recognized a single protein of 61 kDa in an immunoprecipitation of the transfected COS-7 cell lysates.

Nine patients with achondroplasia and one patient with Apert syndrome underwent the surgical lengthening of both humerus and simultaneous correction of both associated bone deformity. An unilateral external fixator was applied to the lateral aspect of the humerus with four half-pins and percutaneous predrilling osteotomy was performed at the apex of flexion deformity of the bone. During the waiting period before distraction, the flexion deformity of the distal humerus was corrected using an additional external fixator.

This report describes a patient with the pulmonary edema after cardioversion for paroxysmal atrial flutter without organic heart disease. A 68-year-old man was admitted to hospital for paroxysmal atrial flutter. Antiarrhythmic agents were not effective, and direct current cardioversion was performed on the 4th hospital day.
