Many institutions use POT as a molecular epidemiological method for analyzing horizontal transmission in methicillin-resistant (MRSA). However, typing and analyzing MRSA only based on POT, with high detection frequency, has some limitations.

The response to steroid in childhood nephrotic syndrome (CNS) varies across geographical regions, depending on aetiology, genetics, and the underlying pathology. Recently, there is an increasing steroid responsiveness among Nigerian children with nephrotic syndrome (NS). This is the first report of CNS at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, Abuja, Nigeria, between 15th January 2016 and 30th June 2018.

Self-Inflicted Drywall Screws in the Sagittal Sinus.

A 30-year-old right-handed man with a history of schizophrenia presented with 2 self-inflicted drywall screws in the skull. The patient was sleepy but easily arousable; blood tests showed he had taken methamphetamines. Computed tomography and computed tomography angiography of the head showed the frontal screw abutted left of the superior sagittal sinus, and the posterior screw went through the superior sagittal sinus with no extravasation of contrast material at either site.

Reversible Parkinson-Like Symptoms in Patient with Bilateral Chronic Subdural Hematomas and Cervical Spinal Stenosis.

Background: Gait abnormalities have been seen in patients with Parkinson disease or Parkinson-like (P-L) disorders and cervical spinal stenosis. Acute presentation of P-L symptoms has been reported in 24 cases caused by chronic subdural hematomas with 11 cases due to bilateral chronic subdural hematomas. When a patient also presents with cervical spinal stenosis, the correct therapeutic decision between P-L disorders and myelopathy is challenging.

Repair of a large osteochondral defect in the knee joint using autologous and artificial bone graft combined with motion preserving distraction arthroplasty: a case report.

The biological reconstruction of a large osteochondral defect in the weight-bearing area of the knee joint has long been a challenge to orthopedic surgeons. We present a case of a large posttraumatic defect in the weight-bearing area of knee joint treated with a novel distraction arthroplasty device after reconstruction of the joint surface using combined autologous and artificial bone graft.

Therapeutic effects of LK 423, a phthalimido-desmuramyl-dipeptide compound, on dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis in rodents through restoring their interleukin-10 producing capacity.

A new phthalimido compound, N-[2-(2-phthalimidoethoxy)acetyl]-L-alanyl-D-glutamic acid (CAS 142489-47-2, LK 423), was examined for its possible activity to modulate levels and species of cytokines in mice carrying a specific inflamed organ. Colonic inflammation was induced in mice by giving 5% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) solution as drinking water. The capacity of spleen cells obtained from the DSS-inflamed mice to produce interleukin-10 (IL-10) in response to mitogen was significantly reduced when compared with the capacity of spleen cells from intact mice.

Interleukin-10 inducing activity of LK423, a phthalimido-desmuramyldipeptide compound.

A new phthalimido compound, N-[2-(2-phthalimidoethoxy)acetyl]-L-alanyl-D-glutamic acid (CAS 142489-47-2, LK423), was examined along with other N-acyl-desmuramyldipeptide compounds for possible immunomodulating activities in cyclophosphamide (Cy)-treated mice. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Northern blot assays demonstrated that multiple subcutaneous injections of LK423 (1 to 50 micrograms/days, for 4 days) into these mice resulted in upregulating interleukin-10 (IL-10) gene expression in the spleen. In contrast to IL-10, expression of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) gene was reduced by treating with this compound.

Prognostic significance of Ki67, p53 and epidermal growth factor receptor immunostaining in human glioblastomas.

Since glioblastomas in adults are uniformly fatal, evaluation of easily reproducible prognostic criteria which would attempt to define groups of patients is required. However, there is lack of a clear consensus regarding the expression of some markers in the literature. Therefore, an immunohistochemical study was performed to determine the prognostic significance of Ki67, p53, and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in a retrospective series of 63 glioblastomas.

A non-radioisotopic human natural killer cell assay using rhodamine-123 fluorescent dye as labelling probe.

A non-radioisotopic method for assessment of human natural killer (NK) cell activity in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) was established by labelling K562 erythroleukemia target cells with a fluorescent dye, rhodamine-123 (Rh-123). The labelling and assay conditions were determined for minimizing spontaneous release (SR). In order to investigate whether NK activity assessed by measuring Rh-123 release agrees with the activity determined by a 51Cr release assay, the NK activity of PBMC was measured simultaneously by both assay methods.
