Background: Hallux valgus affects up to 29% of adults and can be bilateral in 84% of cases. Contemporary surgical techniques provide the possibility of simultaneous bilateral correction, but still there is no consensus on whether staged or simultaneous correction should be performed if both feet are involved. The aim of the present study was to report our experience of treatment of patients with hallux valgus and to perform comparative analysis of results obtained from unilateral and simultaneous bilateral surgical correction.

[Phase-locked alpha oscillations evoked by illusory contour perception in normal and autistic preschool boys].

We examined temporal dynamics of EEG phase-locked alpha oscillations during perception of illusory (Kanizsa square) and non-illusory images in boys with autism and age-matched typically developing boys. In typically developing boys the illusory contour (IC) as compared to the control stimulus provoked an increased alpha response at the parietal scalp areas. This IC effect demonstrated continuity within the time window of 133-267 ms after the stimulus onset.

Parkinson's disease (PD) results from degeneration of dopaminergic (DA-ergic) neurons of sunstantia nigra pars compacta (SNc). In experimental studies, this condition is modelled by administration of neurotoxin's precursor 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1, 2, 3, 6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP). The followed degeneration of DA-ergic neurons is estimated by cell counting.

We examined the changes in the phase-locked and total alpha oscillations of EEG during perception of illusory (Kanizsa square) and non-illusory images in 16 healthy adults. We applied a wavelet-based time-frequency analysis to compute alpha band power, statistical evaluation was performed using repeated-measures ANOVA and the non-parametric multi-way analysis. Results showed that both stimuli provoked an initial increase of total alpha power emerging not later than in 100 ms after the stimulus onset.

[Molecular genetic characterization of avian Chlamydophila psittaci isolates].

Restriction enzyme analysis of the omp1 gene was used to characterize 51 avian Chlamydophila psittaci isolates. The analysis confirmed the predominance of genotype A in parrot C. psittaci isolates and revealed new omp1 genotypes in corvid C.

Outbreak of West Nile virus infection, Volgograd Region, Russia, 1999.

From July 25 to October 1, 1999, 826 patients were admitted to Volgograd Region, Russia, hospitals with acute aseptic meningoencephalitis, meningitis, or fever consistent with arboviral infection. Of 84 cases of meningoencephalitis, 40 were fatal. Fourteen brain specimens were positive in reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction assays, confirming the presence of West Nile/Kunjin virus.

[The use of external fixation apparatus in injuries to the hand bones].

An analysis of experimental studying the stability of osteosynthesis and clinical application of apparatuses of external fixation in 282 patients with fractures and sequellae of traumas of the bones and joints of the hand is presented. Main conditions influencing stability of fixation of the hand bones were determined. A universal complex of details is recommended which allows to make the optimum construction of the device as applied to the specific kind of trauma.

[A comparative evaluation of methods for treating the sequelae of fractures and dislocations of the bones of the hand].

A comparative clinical investigation of effectiveness of different methods of treatment of sequelae of injuries of the hand bones and joints in 159 patients was carried on. Traditional methods of treatment and devices for external fixation were used. An analysis of long-term results of treatment of 145 patients has shown that methods of external fixation by compressive-distraction and hinge-distraction devices are most effective.

[Treatment of open fractures and dislocations of hand long bones].

Efficiency of different fixation methods of open fractures and dislocations of hand tubular bones on the basis of treatment experience of 206 patients has been investigated in clinical conditions. Immobilization with a plaster bandage, osteosynthesis and transarticulation fixation by wires, osteosynthesis by external fixation apparatus were used. An analysis of long-term results of treatment of 128 patients demonstrated that fixation of damaged bones and joints by the external fixation apparatus is the most effective one.

[Comparative evaluation of methods of fixation of metacarpal bone fragments].

The authors have carried out an experimental study of stability of the bone fragments of the 2-5th metacarpal bones in various hypes of fixation of the hands of fresh human cadavers. It has been established that the highest stability in all kinds of fractures in the conditions of functional loading is provided by osteosynthesis with rod apparatnses. A differential approach concerning the choice of the hype of osteosynthesis depending on the fracture plane is necessary in the treatment of the metacarpal bone injuries.
