We report a Food-borne group A streptococcus epidemic at Kitasato University campus on July 30 and 31, 2005, believed caused by lunch. A current mass group A streptococcus infection differing from the food-borne epidemic above occurred at Kitasato University East Hospital, also believed caused by lunch. Group A streptococcus was detected using a prompt diagnostic kit and bacterial culture from 116 clinical specimens taken from 116 patients with group A streptococcus pharyngitis at Kitasato University East Hospital on August 5, 2005.

During vertebrate cardiac development, the heart tube formed by fusion of right and left presumptive cardiac mesoderms (PCMs) undergoes looping toward the right, resulting in an asymmetrical heart. Here, we examined the right and left PCMs with regard to heart-tube looping using right- and left-half newt embryos (Cynops pyrrhogaster ). In the half embryos, the rightward (normal) loop of the heart tube was formed from the left PCM, irrespective of the timing of its separation, while the leftward (reversed) loop of the heart tube was formed from the right PCM, separated by stage 18.

The patient was a 71-year-old woman with sigmoid colon cancer with urinary bladder invasion, for which sigmoidectomy with D 3 lymphadenectomy and partial cystectomy was performed. After surgery, the patient was started on 4 courses of 6-week systemic chemotherapy (500 mg/m(2) 5-FU and 200 mg/m(2) l-LV weekly). However, 4 months later, CT revealed local recurrence in the urinary bladder and recurrence in the para-aortic lymph nodes and spleen.

A 54-year-old female presented with an exacerbation of right middle lobe bronchiectasis. A bronchoscopic bronchial washing and repeated trials of sputum culture consistently recovered no other infectious agent except Exophiala dermatitidis. Her illness was improved by administrations of intravenous miconazole and nebulized amphotericin B when sputum cultures yielded no fungi, demonstrating a pathogenic role of the fungi.

The susceptibility of clinical isolates of Mycobacterium avium to rifampicin (RIF) was examined. The authors conducted questionnaire surveys utilizing model cases with the aim of investigating the current views of psychiatrists regarding criminal responsibility judgments in forensic psychiatric evaluations. Six model cases-injury by a person with acute schizophrenia, indecent assault by a person with chronic schizophrenia, attempted murder by a woman with depression, arson by an alcohol abuser, burglary by an amphetamine abuser, rape and indecent assault by a person with personality disorder-were presented to 345 psychiatrists, who were asked about criminal responsibility and appropriate treatment for each of the cases. One hundred eighty-five of the psychiatrists responded.

Expression of B lymphocyte-induced maturation protein 1 (Blimp-1) transcription factor is essential for promoting B cell differentiation into plasma cells. However, a critical transcription factor for Blimp-1 expression in activated B cells is unclear. Activation of murine peritoneal macrophages or the macrophage cell line RAW264 with IFN-gamma and bacterial lipopolysaccharide promotes a transient up-regulation of c-fos family gene expression following inducible NO synthase (iNOS) production. Since introduction of a double mutation into the two AP-1-binding sites in the iNOS promoter region reduced the promoter activity to 25% of the authentic one in activated RAW264 cells, the induced c-Fos/AP-1 may promote iNOS expression in activated macrophages. Surprisingly, overexpression of c-fos in activated macrophages completely suppressed the production of iNOS, but not that of IL-6 and IL-1beta.

The nontoxic-nonhemagglutinin (NTNHA) component, in both isolated form and the neurotoxin (NT)/NTNHA complexed form, was prepared protease-free from toxin complexes produced by Clostridium botulinum type D strain 4947. NTNHA in both preparations was found to be spontaneously converted to the nicked NTNHA form leading to 15- and 115-kDa fragments with the excision of several amino acid residues at specific sites on SDS-PAGE during long-term incubation, while that of the NT/NTNHA/hemagglutinin complexed form remained unnicked single-chain polypeptides under the same conditions. Considering that the NTNHA preparation contained small amounts of the nicked form of NTNHA and the addition of trypsin accelerated the cleavage, it is speculated that a nicked form of NTNHA remaining after the purification and/or NTNHA itself catalyzes the cleavage of intact NTNHA.

We have identified a novel subset of early B lineage cells in the mouse bone marrow (BM) by GL7 expression on cell surface. GL7(+)B220(low) BM cells have a large cell size and are CD43(-to low), CD95(-), Sca-1(-), I-A(low), IgM(-) and IgD(-), suggesting that they are large pre-B cells. These BM cells express lambda5 and VpreB but not terminal deoxytransferase (TdT) and Bcl-2, and approximately 50 % of them are in cell cycle.

The first case involved a 74-year-old man with abdominal pain who was admitted to our hospital with a tentative diagnosis of intra-abdominal bleeding of unknown origin.
