Objectives: Falls in hospitals lead to adverse patient outcomes and prevention of falls is of upmost importance. Little is known about fall and injury rates in chronic care facilities, which are similar to skilled nursing facilities in the United States. Current fall risk tools in this setting are not well studied.

To date, the ES has not been used nor evaluated in the clinical cancer genetics setting. View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: Genetic counseling (GC) and germline genetic testing (GT) for BRCA1 and BRCA2 are considered standard of care for patients with high-grade, non-mucinous epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube, and primary peritoneal cancers (HGOC). We describe a universal genetic testing initiative to increase the rates of recommendation and acceptance of GC and GT to >80% for patients with HGOC at our institution.
Methods: Data from a consecutive cohort of patients seen in our gynecologic oncology clinics between 9/1/2012 and 8/31/2015 for evaluation of HGOC were retrospectively analyzed.
Despite frequent use of metered dose inhalers (MDIs) and spacers in equine practice, limited information exists on the efficiency of aerosol delivery using such devices. We determined the particle size distribution within an MDI-generated salbutamol aerosol delivered via an equine spacer using 'best practice' delivery technique and assessed the effect of variations in MDI use technique (shaking prior to each actuation, rapid repetitive actuations, and MDI angulation) on aerosol delivery efficiency. Under optimal conditions, only 53(±18) μg salbutamol per 100 μg actuation was delivered beyond the spacer.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFPurpose: To analyze the effectiveness of a certified child life specialist (CCLS) in reducing the frequency of daily anesthesia at our institution, and to quantify the potential health care payer cost savings of CCLS utilization in the United States.
Methods And Materials: From 2006 to 2014, 738 children (aged ≤21 years) were treated with radiation therapy at our institution. We retrospectively analyzed the frequency of daily anesthesia before and after hiring a CCLS in 2011 after excluding patients aged 0 to 2 and >12 years.
Lysosomes are crucial cellular organelles for human health that function in digestion and recycling of extracellular and intracellular macromolecules. We describe a signaling role for lysosomes that affects aging. In the worm Caenorhabditis elegans, the lysosomal acid lipase LIPL-4 triggered nuclear translocalization of a lysosomal lipid chaperone LBP-8, which promoted longevity by activating the nuclear hormone receptors NHR-49 and NHR-80.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: To determine if child care centers in rural, Western North Carolina met recommendations for nutrition and physical activity, if focusing on nutrition and physical activity practices and policies was effective in improving the center environment, and if differences existed between centers affiliated or unaffiliated with schools.
Methods: Of 33 child care centers in three counties, 29 submitted mini-grant requests and participated in a pre-post evaluation using Nutrition and Physical Activity Self-Assessment for Child Care (NAP SACC). NAP SACC assesses compliance for nutrition and physical activity recommendations and standards.

Eruptions in cancer patients may signal life-threatening infections, cutaneous metastases or reactions to chemotherapeutic agents. Distinguishing between these processes is essential to correctly treat the patient. The authors present a patient with a diffuse eruption that was initially believed to be infectious in etiology.

Although previous studies have investigated the short-term clinical and histological results, there have been no studies to investigate longer-term changes.
Methods: Fourteen patients (23 sites) were assessed.
Severe scarring acne is frequently treated with isotretinoin. Patients treated with this drug may expect some of the more common complications including mucositis. Less common complications may also occur in a small number of patients.

Transgenic mice that express FAD mutant APP and PS1 overproduce Abeta42 and exhibit amyloid plaque pathology similar to that found in AD, but most transgenic models develop plaques slowly. To accelerate plaque development and investigate the effects of very high cerebral Abeta42 levels, we generated APP/PS1 double transgenic mice that coexpress five FAD mutations (5XFAD mice) and additively increase Abeta42 production.

It has been reported that statins reduce the risk of developing the disorder, and a link between cholesterol and Alzheimer disease pathophysiology has been proposed. It is less well understood, however, how the destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells is effected and why neighboring non-beta islet cells are spared. Also incompletely explained are the observations that, unlike other autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, IDDM does not preferentially affect females, the incidence of the disease is highest among young adults, and there are temporal correlations between the onset of the disease and emotional trauma.

The same two chromosome pairs always form the univalents.
