Temperatures obtained from early Cassini infrared observations of Titan show a stratopause at an altitude of 310 kilometers (and 186 kelvin at 15 degrees S). Stratospheric temperatures are coldest in the winter northern hemisphere, with zonal winds reaching 160 meters per second. The concentrations of several stratospheric organic compounds are enhanced at mid- and high northern latitudes, and the strong zonal winds may inhibit mixing between these latitudes and the rest of Titan.

The current study was designed to compare the skeletal effects of comparable doses of rat parathyroid hormone 1-34 (rPTH) and bovine parathyroid hormone 1-34 (bPTH) in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were OVX or sham-operated at 6 months of age and maintained untreated for 28 days after surgery. Baseline control and OVX rats were sacrificed at the beginning of treatment.

To inform future health promotion programmes, we studied the knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of the Northern Ireland population to sun care. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was applied to one adult per household from a random sample of 1242 addresses. Lower levels of knowledge were found among respondents who were male, aged under 25 years or over 65 years, in a manual occupation or living in the west where health promotion activity on this topic was less active than in the east.

Stratospheric temperatures on Saturn imply a strong decay of the equatorial winds with altitude. If the decrease in winds reported from recent Hubble Space Telescope images is not a temporal change, then the features tracked must have been at least 130 kilometers higher than in earlier studies. Saturn's south polar stratosphere is warmer than predicted from simple radiative models.

To establish whether treatment recommendations made by clinicians concur with the best outcomes predicted from their prognostic estimates and whether team discussion improves the quality or outcome of their decision making, the authors studied real-time decision making by a lung cancer team. Clinicians completed pre- and postdiscussion questionnaires for 50 newly diagnosed patients. For each patient/doctor pairing, a decision model determined the expected patient outcomes from the clinician's prognostic estimates.

The Composite Infrared Spectrometer observed Jupiter in the thermal infrared during the swing-by of the Cassini spacecraft. Results include the detection of two new stratospheric species, the methyl radical and diacetylene, gaseous species present in the north and south auroral infrared hot spots; determination of the variations with latitude of acetylene and ethane, the latter a tracer of atmospheric motion; observations of unexpected spatial distributions of carbon dioxide and hydrogen cyanide, both considered to be products of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 impacts; characterization of the morphology of the auroral infrared hot spot acetylene emission; and a new evaluation of the energetics of the northern auroral infrared hot spot.

The influence of three important cytokines (IL-8, TNF-alpha, and HuIFN-alpha) on ongoing rhinovirus infections has been examined in vitro, individually or as combinations. TNF-alpha was able to transform traces of HRV infections into full-blown infections. Furthermore, TNF-alpha was able to down-regulate the antiviral action of HuIFN-alpha completely, even at levels of just a few pg/ml.

The title enzyme, peptidylglycine alpha-hydroxylating monooxygenase (PHM), is essential to the in vivo generation of a wide variety of physiologically significant alpha-amidated peptide hormones from the corresponding C-terminal glycine-extended prohormones. Over a 20-year period of time a massive amount of experimental information about the enzyme has accumulated, but its mechanism of action has remained obscure. A major stumbling block to proposed mechanisms is the fact that the two copper atoms found in the active site are fixed 11 A apart.

Two dogs presented with acute tetraparesis, hypoventilation, and bradycardia with a second-degree atrioventricular heart block. Neurological examination localized both lesions to the cervical spine. Diagnostic imaging revealed a ventral extradural compression at the second to third cervical (C(2)-C(3)) region in one dog and at the third to fourth cervical (C(3)-C(4)) region in the other.

The Earth's equatorial stratosphere shows oscillations in which the east-west winds reverse direction and the temperatures change cyclically with a period of about two years. This phenomenon, called the quasi-biennial oscillation, also affects the dynamics of the mid- and high-latitude stratosphere and weather in the lower atmosphere. Ground-based observations have suggested that similar temperature oscillations (with a 4-5-yr cycle) occur on Jupiter, but these data suffer from poor vertical resolution and Jupiter's stratospheric wind velocities have not yet been determined.

Osteoactivin (OA) is a novel protein identified by mRNA differential display using bone from osteopetrotic versus normal rats. Bioinformatic analysis showed that OA cDNA has an open reading frame of 1716 bp encoding a protein of 572 aa, the first 21 aa constitute a signal peptide. OA sequence analysis also demonstrated 13 putative N-glycosylation sites suggestive of a heavily glycosylated protein.

Comets have been suggested as a possibly significant source of organic molecules to the early Earth. Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is important in models of prebiotic chemistry, but may be difficult to form in the early terrestrial environment, while hydrogen isocyanide (HNC) is a 'classical' tracer of interstellar ion-molecule chemistry. We have observed both HCN and HNC in 2 recent comets, bringing the number of comets with published measurements of the HNC/HCN abundance ratio to 6.

Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) is a secreted, extracellular matrix-associated signaling protein that regulates diverse cellular functions. In vivo, CTGF is expressed in many tissues with highest levels in the kidney and brain. The purpose of this study was twofold; first, to localize CTGF in normal bone in vivo during growth and repair, and second, to examine CTGF expression and function in primary osteoblast cultures in vitro and test its effect on bone formation in vivo.

Aims: To describe presentations to emergency departments during the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games for conditions related to the use of illicit drugs; to discuss the implications of such presentations for surveillance and public health action at similar events in the future.

Design: Identification of target presentations in sentinel emergency departments; entry of data into a purpose-built database; and daily electronic transfer of data for central collation and analysis.

Setting: Fifteen sentinel emergency departments in the greater Sydney metropolitan area for a 38-day period spanning the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
