Background: A recent attempt to improve the diagnostic value of adjusted calcium addressed a primary care-specific adjusted calcium equation, but validated the new equation for Roche Cobas, BCG and NM-BAPTA methods only. In this study, we aim to validate a population-specific equation for other methods and platforms.

Method: We collected retrospective patient data-sets from 15 hospital laboratories using a range of commercially available analytical platforms and methods for calcium and albumin measurements.

Standard ionic equilibria equations may be used for calculating pH of weak acid and base solutions. These calculations are difficult or impossible to solve analytically for foods that include many unknown buffering components, making pH prediction in these systems impractical. We combined buffer capacity (BC) models with a pH prediction algorithm to allow pH prediction in complex food matrices from BC data.

Biodegradation and biosorption of Reactive Red 120 dye by immobilized Pseudomonas guariconensis: Kinetic and toxicity study.

Reactive dyes are pernicious pollutants in textile effluent, which are to be treated passably before discharging into the environment. In the present study, a potential dye degrading bacterial strain Pseudomonas guariconensis was isolated from paddy rhizosphere and was characterized by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The biodegradation ability of the strain was evaluated by time-based study with immobilized bacterial cells in calcium alginate biocarrier matrix and also with free cells.

Background: Many cancers arise from mutations in cells within epithelial tissues. Mutations manifesting at the subcellular level influence the structure and function of the tissue resulting in cancer. Previous work has proposed how cell level properties can lead to mutant cell invasion, but has not incorporated detailed subcellular modelling RESULTS: We present a framework that allows the straightforward integration and simulation of SBML representations of subcellular dynamics within multiscale models of epithelial tissues.

Quality of Life of Latino and Non-Latino Youth With Sickle Cell Disease as Reported by Parents and Youth.

Introduction: Approximately 10% to 15% of people affected by sickle cell disease (SCD) in the United States are Latino, many of whom are primary Spanish speakers. A key tool for self-reported outcome measures, the Pediatric QOL Inventory (PedsQL) SCD module, was not available in Spanish. Here, we assess the linguistic validity of a Spanish translation and compare perception of disease-specific and generic quality of life (QOL) in a sample of Latino and non-Latino children with SCD and their parents.

Development of endometrial stromal sarcoma in a patient undergoing in vitro fertilization: A case report.

Development of endometrial stromal sarcoma during in vitro fertilization (IVF) is rare. We encountered a case of endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) presenting as a new endometrial mass in a patient undergoing donor egg IVF, despite normal imaging and exams prior to and throughout treatment. To our knowledge, this is the only report describing the rapid growth of ESS during IVF treatment.

Undifferentiated febrile illnesses in South Sudan: a case series from Operation TRENTON from June to August 2017.

Undifferentiated febrile illnesses present diagnostic and treatment challenges in the Firm Base, let alone in the deployed austere environment. We report a series of 14 cases from Operation TRENTON in South Sudan in 2017 that coincided with the rainy season, increased insect numbers and a Relief in Place. The majority of patients had headaches, myalgia, arthralgia and back pain, as well as leucopenia and thrombocytopenia.

Quantifying the relative predation pressure on bumblebee nests by the European badger () using artificial nests.

Bumblebee populations are declining. Factors that impact the size and success of colonies act by either limiting resource availability (bottom-up regulation) or causing mortality, for example, pesticides, disease, and possibly predation (top-down regulation). The impact of predation has not been quantified, and so, the current study used novel artificial nests as a proxy for wild bumblebee nests to quantify the relative predation pressure from badgers in two habitats: woodland and grassland, and at two nesting depths: surface and underground.

Risk factors for seizures after intracerebral hemorrhage: Ethnic/Racial Variations of Intracerebral Hemorrhage (ERICH) Study.

Objective: We aimed to identify risk factors for seizures after intracerebral hemorrhage, and to validate the prognostic value of the previously reported CAVE score (0-4 points: cortical involvement, age <65, volume >10 mL, and early seizures within 7 days of hemorrhage).

Purpose: To examine the effects of daily cold- and hot-water recovery on training load (TL) during 5 days of heat-based training.

Methods: Eight men completed 5 days of cycle training for 60 minutes (50% peak power output) in 4 different conditions in a block counter-balanced-order design. Three conditions were completed in the heat (35°C) and 1 in a thermoneutral environment (24°C; CON).

Pilot Study of Hyperfractionated Dosing of Lutetium-177-Labeled Antiprostate-Specific Membrane Antigen Monoclonal Antibody J591 ( Lu-J591) for Metastatic Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer.

Lessons Learned: Hyperfractionation of lutetium-177 ( Lu)-J591 for patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer did not appear to have any additional advantage over the single dose Lu-J591 or fractionated two-dose Lu-J591 therapy. Definite conclusions were challenging because of the small sample size of this study, and so further studies are needed to evaluate the viability of the hypothesis. Design: Thirty-to 60-minute semistructured interviews framed using a clinical decision-making model (CDMM) were conducted with community pharmacists and residents.

Design and implementation of electron diverters for lobster eye space-based X-ray optics.

Micropore optics have recently been implemented in a lobster eye geometry as a compact X-ray telescope. Fields generated by rare-earth magnets are used to reduce the flux of energetic electrons incident upon the focal plane detector in such a setup. As a World Health Organization Research and Development Blueprint priority pathogen, there is a need to better understand the geographic distribution of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and its potential to infect mammals and humans. This database documents cases of MERS-CoV globally, with specific attention paid to zoonotic transmission. An initial literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus; after screening articles according to the inclusion/exclusion criteria, a total of 208 sources were selected for extraction and geo-positioning.
