Canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV2) is one of the most important intestinal pathogens in dogs and puppies. CPV2 has been evolved into three genetic and antigenic variants (2a, 2b, and 2c), which are distributed worldwide. We reported the first study of genetic diversity of CPV2 in Chile.

California's Central Valley, USA is a critical component of the Pacific Flyway despite loss of more than 90% of its wetlands. Moist soil seed (MSS) wetland plants are now produced by mimicking seasonal flooding in managed wetlands to provide an essential food resource for waterfowl. Managers need MSS plant area and productivity estimates to support waterfowl conservation, yet this remains unknown at the landscape scale.

To reduce the sugar content of processed foods through reformulation, the first step is to determine the content of the largest sources of sugars in each country's diet. The aim of this work was to describe the sugar content in the most commonly consumed processed foods in Spain and to compare that sugar's labelling and laboratory analysis values (LVs and AVs, respectively) to confirm its adequacy. A sample of the 1173 most commonly consumed processed foods in Spain (28 groups; 77 subcategories) was collected.

Context: Some studies suggest that consumption of dairy products can aid in weight loss, while others suggest a negative effect or no effect.

Objective: An overview of systematic reviews and meta-analyses was conducted to examine the effect of dairy product consumption on changes in body composition.

Data Sources: PRISMA guidelines were followed to ensure transparent reporting of evidence.

The present study aimed to assess energy intake, nutrient profile and food sources in Spanish children participating in the EsNuPI ("Estudio Nutricional en Población Infantil Española") study. Plausibility of energy intake and adequacy of nutrient intakes to international recommendations were analyzed in a final sample of 1448 subjects (728 boys and 720 girls) and one group representative of the 1 to <10 years old urban Spanish children (reference sample ( = 707)) who consumed milk and one of the same age who consumed adapted milk over the last year (adapted milk consumers sample ( = 741)) were compared. Both groups completed data of a face-to-face and a telephone 24-h dietary recalls.

Poor diet quality and obesity, especially abdominal obesity, have been associated with systemic inflammation. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) is an available and inexpensive inflammation biomarker. The aim of the present study was to determine the association of dietary patterns and obesity with an inflammatory state.

Despite their enormous economic importance and the fact that there are almost 5000 tephritid (Diptera) species, fruit fly - host plant interactions are poorly understood from a chemical perspective. We analyzed the interactions among Anastrepha acris (a little studied monophagous tephritid) and its highly toxic host plant Hippomane mancinella from chemical, ecological and experimental perspectives, and also searched for toxicants from H. mancinella in the larval-pupal endoparasitoid Doryctobracon areolatus.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how different nutritional strategies impact the performance and health of Nellore heifers grazing in tropical Brazil, focusing on factors like metabolic profile and ovarian activity.
  • Forty heifers were divided into four groups based on varying amounts of protein-energy supplements given before and after weaning.
  • Results showed that increasing post-weaning supplement intake improved nutrient digestibility, insulin and glucose levels, daily weight gain, and ovarian health, indicating that higher amounts of supplements lead to better overall performance in heifers.

Active commuting (AC) has been proposed as a great opportunity to increase physical activity level (PA) in children and adolescents. The aim of the present study is to determine the associations between AC (walk and cycle commuting) and non-AC (motor vehicle commuting) with PA levels, and with AC and sedentarism in Spanish children and adolescents. A representative Spanish sample of 424 children and adolescents (38% females) was involved in the ANIBES (Anthropometry, Dietary Intake and Lifestyle in Spain) Study in 2013.

Biocrusts are an important drylands landscape component, which enriches the upper millimeters of the soil with organic matter and initiates biogeochemical cycles. However, little is known about the influence of biocrusts on soil bacterial community structure and diversity. Different biocrust types representing a successional gradient were studied.

Background: Sodium intake is excessive among Spanish children, but the salt use behaviors of parents and children are unknown. This study aims to determine behaviors related to salt intake in both schoolchildren and parents and the relationship between parental behaviors and 24 h urinary sodium excretion (UNa-24h) in children.

Subjects And Methods: A convenience sample was taken from a cross-sectional analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • A growing interest in healthy diets and lifestyles during childhood emphasizes their importance in preventing chronic diseases later in life, as dietary habits formed early tend to continue into adulthood.
  • The EsNuPI study focuses on Spanish children aged 1 to under 10, examining their dietary patterns, physical activity, and sedentary behaviors through surveys and food frequency questionnaires.
  • This research is unique for being the first comprehensive study of its kind in Spain for this age group, also exploring the impact of milk formulas and dairy on diet quality and overall health.

Lanthanides are routinely incorporated into quantum dots to act as down-shifting and up-converting phosphors in display and lighting applications due to their high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY). Recent efforts in the field have demonstrated that trivalent lanthanide, Ln(III), incorporated into ZnAlO spinel nanocrystals can achieve PLQYs of 50% for down-shifting nanophosphors using earth abundant materials. The high PLQY is surprising as the Al(III) site in a spinel is centrosymmetric, which should lead to poor performance for these nanophosphors.

This article describes a technique to improve the quality of digital intraoral scans for complete-arch prostheses by correcting the cumulative deviations that may arise with conventional digital methods. The approach involves an additional scan in which a reference-marked rigid splint of known dimensions is used to reduce the likelihood of such deviations. The scanned files are sectioned and best fit aligned to generate a more reliable definitive cast and consequently a better-fitting prosthesis.

Purpose: Our objective was to investigate the impact of inter-vendor variability in the ability of myocardial strain analysis to detect acute cellular rejection (ACR) in heart transplant recipients.

Methods: We performed serial echocardiographic examinations in 18 consecutive adult heart transplanted patients, in their first year post-transplantation, within 3 hours of the routine surveillance endomyocardial biopsies (EMB) in a single center. Myocardial strain was analyzed using two software in two different institutions, and inter-vendor variability of strain values and its association with ACR (any grade or grade ≥2R) was investigated.

This research aimed to determine the presence of paramphistomids in cattle slaughtered in a slaughterhouse of the Ñuble Region of Chile, to identify flukes and to analyze the frequency of these parasites in the Maule, Ñuble, and Biobío administrative regions of Chile. Between October of 2016 and April of 2017, rumens of 494 cattle were examined for flukes in the forestomachs. Worms were identified morphologically and, in addition, molecular analysis of the internal transcriber spacer region 2 of the fluke's DNA was done and phylogenetic analyses were performed with Bayesian inference in 14 worms.
