While learning and memory are related, they are distinct processes each with different forms of expression and underlying molecular mechanisms. An invertebrate model system, Lymnaea stagnalis, is used to study memory formation of a non-declarative memory. We have done so because: (1) We have discovered the neural circuit that mediates an interesting and tractable behaviour; (2) This behaviour can be operantly conditioned and intermediate-term and long-term memory can be demonstrated; and (3) It is possible to demonstrate that a single neuron in the model system is a necessary site of memory formation.

Background: Among the 65 million Americans with hypertension, only approximately 31% have their blood pressure under control (<140/90 mm/Hg). Despite the damaging impact of hypertension and the availability of evidence-based target values for blood pressure, interventions to improve blood pressure control have had limited success.
Objectives: A randomized controlled health services intervention trial with a two by two design is being conducted to improve blood pressure control.
Over the last decade, the introduction of microarray technology has had a profound impact on gene expression research. The publication of studies with dissimilar or altogether contradictory results, obtained using different microarray platforms to analyze identical RNA samples, has raised concerns about the reliability of this technology. The MicroArray Quality Control (MAQC) project was initiated to address these concerns, as well as other performance and data analysis issues.

As part of the MicroArray Quality Control (MAQC) study, two types of ERCs were implemented and evaluated; one was added to the total RNA in the samples before amplification and labeling; the other was added to the copyRNAs (cRNAs) before hybridization. ERC concentration-response curves were used across multiple commercial microarray platforms to identify problematic assays and potential sources of variation in the analytical process.

There were 3749 fixed-facility manufacturing events, of which 2100 involved "interruptions" to normal processing and 1649 "comparisons" that did not involve interruption. Equipment failure (69%) or intentional acts (20%) were the main root factor.

While this CPG is 'hard-wired' it displays a tremendous amount of plasticity. Toxicogenomics has evolved into a useful technique for providing greater mechanistic insights into adverse effects that will spur the development of novel approaches for identifying and understanding toxicity issues. The ability to capture a snapshot of the transcriptome at any given time during the development of an adverse phenotype allows unprecedented molecular views into the dynamic physiological changes that are occurring on either time or dose continuum for a toxicology study of interest advancing our basic knowledge of adverse events, and providing the necessary scientific framework for developing new strategies and tools for safety assessment programs. The development of an effective subset of cost effective devices for identifying toxicity earlier in the drug development process will help identify the most promising candidate compounds to move forward leading to a reduction in compound attrition due to toxicity.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe demonstrate that high-frequency and high-intensity ultrasound (US) can be applied to both tissue fixation and tissue processing to complete the conventional overnight formalin-fixation and paraffin-embedding (FFPE) procedures within 1 hr. US-facilitated FFPE retains superior tissue morphology and long-term room temperature storage stability than conventional FFPE. There is less alteration of protein antigenicity after US-FFPE preservation so that rapid immunohistochemical reactions occur with higher sensitivity and intensity, reducing the need for antigen retrieval pretreatment.

One such gene, ICP47, binds to the transporter associated with antigen presentation (TAP) 1/2 thereby preventing transport of viral peptides into the endoplasmic reticulum, loading of peptides onto nascent major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules, and presentation of peptides to CD8 T cells. However, ICP47 binds poorly to murine TAP1/2 and so inhibits antigen presentation by MHC class I in mice much less efficiently than in humans, limiting the utility of murine models to address the importance of MHC class I inhibition in HSV immunopathogenesis.

The sound analysed for this paper came from the Australian National Database of Spoken Language, more specifically the male speaker 17. The /x/ was isolated and extracted from the database by the author in a quiet booth using standard multimedia software.

The Hazardous Substances Emergency Events Surveillance (HSEES) system is a comprehensive, state-based surveillance system of hazardous substance releases and public health consequences. Maintained by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) since 1990, the system captures information on acute releases of hazardous substances that need to be cleaned up or neutralized according to federal, state, or local law. Information about threatened releases that result in public health action such as evacuation is also included.

Objectives: A randomized controlled trial involving a nurse administered patient-tailored intervention is being conducted to improve blood pressure (BP) control.
Methods: Veterans with hypertension from an outpatient primary care clinic completed a baseline assessment and were randomly allocated to either a nurse administered intervention or to usual care. In this ongoing study, intervention patients receive the tailored intervention bi-monthly for 2 years via telephone; the goal of the intervention is to promote adherence with medication and improve health behaviors.
Purpose: To test whether variation in extracellular cysteine (Cys) redox potential (E(h)) over the physiologic range occurring in human plasma affects oxidant-induced apoptosis in cultured human retinal pigment epithelial (hRPE) cells.
Methods: The hRPE cells were incubated in culture medium with E(h) established over the range of -16 mV (most oxidized) to -158 mV (most reduced) by adding different concentrations of Cys and cystine (CySS) with constant total Cys equivalents. Apoptosis was induced with tert-butylhydroperoxide (tBH).
Data from the Hazardous Substances Emergency Events Surveillance (HSEES) system were analyzed for the period 1996-2001 to describe the chemicals, causal factors, temporal patterns, types of adverse effects, and public health actions (e.g., an evacuation) associated with releases of hazardous chemicals in the home.

In virus-infected cells the transcription factors ATF-2, c-Jun, interferon regulatory factor (IRF)-3, IRF-7 and NF-kappaB, and the coactivators p300/CBP play critical roles in the activation of this and other promoters. It remains unclear, however, why most other combinations of AP-1, IRF and Rel proteins fail to activate the interferon-beta gene.

Methods: A retrospective chart review of all patients who received BF ECT for a depressive disorder between January 2000 and December 2002 was made.
Results: Fourteen patients, with a mean age of 73.
Background: Racial distribution of clinical trial participants is important because results from these studies serve to define evidence-based practice. This report summarizes the experience of the VA Cooperative Studies Program (CSP) in enrolling white, black and Hispanic patients.
Methods: An analysis of enrollment in randomized controlled trials conducted by VA CSP between 1975 and 2000.
Knowledge of the minimum level of vaccination capable of preventing measles transmission in an age group is helpful for establishing program targets for measles elimination. In 1990, during the measles resurgence in the United States, one-half of cases occurred in children aged <5 years. Although estimated population immunity among persons >or=6 years of age was 93%, immunity was lower and varied widely among preschool-aged children.

Objective: To examine the clinical practice of right unilateral electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) administered at six times seizure threshold (6 x RUL ECT).
Method: A retrospective review of all patients who received 6 x RUL ECT between July 2000 and June 2002.
