Cellular senescence is a cell state triggered by programmed physiological processes or cellular stress responses. Stress-induced senescent cells often acquire pathogenic traits, including a toxic secretome and resistance to apoptosis. When pathogenic senescent cells form faster than they are cleared by the immune system, they accumulate in tissues throughout the body and contribute to age-related diseases, including neurodegeneration.

Public health interventions reduce infection risk, while imposing significant costs on both individuals and the society. Interventions can also lead to behavioral changes, as individuals weigh the cost and benefits of avoiding infection. Aggregate epidemiological models typically focus on the population-level consequences of interventions, often not incorporating the mechanisms driving behavioral adaptations associated with interventions compliance.

Introduction: Alzheimer's disease (AD), primary age-related tauopathy (PART), and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) all feature hyperphosphorylated tau (p-tau)-immunoreactive neurofibrillary degeneration, but differ in neuroanatomical distribution and progression of neurofibrillary degeneration and amyloid beta (Aβ) deposition.

Methods: We used Nanostring GeoMx Digital Spatial Profiling to compare the expression of 70 proteins in neurofibrillary tangle (NFT)-bearing and non-NFT-bearing neurons in hippocampal CA1, CA2, and CA4 subregions and entorhinal cortex of cases with autopsy-confirmed AD (n = 8), PART (n = 7), and CTE (n = 5).

Results: There were numerous subregion-specific differences related to Aβ processing, autophagy/proteostasis, inflammation, gliosis, oxidative stress, neuronal/synaptic integrity, and p-tau epitopes among these different disorders.

Following a recent dramatic increase in illegal fishing by Indonesian fishing vessels in Australian waters in 2022, we conducted an extensive survey of coral reef communities covering 33,000 m at Mermaid Reef Marine Park in the Rowley Shoals off north-western Australia in July 2022. Species richness of sea cucumbers was 13 species (three CITES listed) and 6 species of giant clams (all CITES listed). The most abundant sea cucumber species were the low or intermediate value, asexually reproducing species Holothuria atra and H.

Article Synopsis
  • The Afrotropical region has a rich diversity of endemic bee groups, particularly the Nomiinae subfamily, but their study has often lacked an integrated approach.
  • Researchers used phylogenomics, molecular dating, and distribution modeling to investigate the evolutionary ecology of the genus Trinomia, analyzing data from 59 species, including all six Trinomia species.
  • Findings indicated that Trinomia is monophyletic with unexpected connections to the Asian genus Gnathonomia, and suggests a recent origin of Trinomia around 5.8 million years ago, highlighting the need for further research on African bee biodiversity.

Article Synopsis
  • Ecological disturbances can either boost or lower biodiversity, and beekeeping is a type of disturbance when honey bees are introduced to an area.
  • A study in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau found that beekeeping reduced native bee populations mainly due to competition for flower resources, but over time, areas without apiaries saw native bee numbers recover.
  • The research highlights that while a moderate number of honey bee colonies might not lead to permanent negative effects on native bees, it can still significantly change local bee communities in the long run.

Objective: With the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic exacerbating mental health concerns, the prevalence rates of anxiety and sleep problems have increased alarmingly among youth. Although 90% of patients with anxiety experience sleep problems, current interventions for anxiety often do not target sleep problems in youth. Given this lack, we designed the SMILE app, an intervention that addresses both anxiety and sleep problems simultaneously.

Article Synopsis
  • - Cellular senescence is a state where cells resist dying and stop dividing, first seen in dividing cells but now recognized in non-dividing cells like neurons.
  • - Confusion arises in understanding senescence in neurons because they can be in a quiescent (inactive) state, leading researchers to suggest a new term, 'neurescent,' for these senescent neurons.
  • - The study proposes criteria to identify neurescent cells, explains their differences from quiescent neurons, and contrasts neurescent states with traditional senescence observed in dividing cells.
