Organic photovoltaics are a sustainable and cost-effective power-generation technology that may aid the move to zero-emission buildings, carbon neutral cities, and electric vehicles. While state-of-the-art organic photovoltaic devices can be encapsulated to withstand air and moisture, they are currently still susceptible to light-induced degradation, leading to a decline in the long-term efficiency of the devices. In this study, the role of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on a multilayer organic photovoltaic device is systematically uncovered using spectral filtering.

Osteogenesis imperfecta is a heritable group of collagen-related disorders that affects up to 50,000 people in the United States. Although the disease is most symptomatic in childhood, adults with osteogenesis imperfecta also are affected by the sequelae of the disease. Orthopaedic manifestations include posttraumatic and accelerated degenerative joint disease, kyphoscoliosis, and spondylolisthesis.

The success of semiconducting organic materials has enabled green technologies for electronics, lighting, and photovoltaics. However, when blended together, these materials have also raised novel fundamental questions with respect to electronic, optical, and thermodynamic properties. This is particularly important for organic photovoltaic cells based on the bulk heterojunction.

Unlabelled: The impact of side-chain variations on the photothermal stability of solar cells containing poly(benzodithiophene-diketopyrrolopyrrole) polymers are investigated in the absence of oxygen. Four different side-chains of benzodithiophene (BDT) are synthesized and copolymerized with diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) by Stille polymerization. The photothermal stability is measured as active layer blends with phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) in encapsulated inverted photovoltaic cell architecture with zinc oxide and

Pedot: PSS as transport layers (ITO/ZnO/active layer/

Pedot: PSS/Ag).

Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate adherence to Papanicolaou (Pap) test guidelines 6 months prior to and 6 months following a 30-min educational clinical practice meeting in a pediatric primary care office. Guidelines for Pap tests have been revised in recent years by the American Academy of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Cancer Society, and the U.S.

The solution and liquid crystalline phases formed by dissolution of the dye Edicol Sunset Yellow (ESY) in water have been examined using optical microscopy, multinuclear NMR (1H, 2H, 13C, 23Na), and X-ray diffraction. From the solution 1H and 13C spectra (particularly 13C), it is clear that the tautomeric form present in all these phases is the hydrazone, NH, structure, not the usually given azo, OH, form. Two chromonic mesophases occur: a nematic (N) phase at approximately 30-40 wt % and a hexagonal (M) phase at approximately 40-45 wt %.

In the following case, a 20-year-old male was involved in a motorcycle accident where he sustained an open midshaft femur fracture treated with open reduction and internal fixation. Several weeks later, the wound became infected and the plate was removed. Over the following 20 years numerous incision and debridements were performed, with multiple courses of antibiotics for persisting infection.

The chondroprotective effect of betamethasone was examined to determine if corticosteroids can decrease articular cartilage injury caused by inflammatory exudate in Staphylococcus aureus gonarthritis in rabbits. Three experimental groups of antibiotic-treated rabbits were created, comparing parenteral versus low-dose intraarticular routes of betamethasone administration. Rabbits that received ceftriaxone plus supplemental parenteral betamethasone (group 2) demonstrated significantly less articular cartilage proteoglycan loss than did rabbits treated with antibiotics alone (group 1).

In the competitive athlete, there are many causes of anterior knee pain, one of which is patellar tendinitis. Repetition of explosive movements can cause microtrauma to the tendon and its insertion, resulting in patellar tendinitis and occasional tearing, either partial or total. Due to its refractory nature, the treatment of this disorder can be quite frustrating to all involved.

Impingement syndrome and osteoarthritis of the acromioclavicular joint often coexist. Failure to address acromioclavicular joint disease can be a common cause of failure in the surgical treatment of impingement syndrome. Arthroscopic treatment of each of these disorders independently yields more favorable results than open procedures.

A technique has been developed for the repair of Achilles tendon ruptures that allows for early mobilization of the patient. A Dacron vascular graft is woven from distal to proximal and across the site of the rupture in a Bunnell-type fashion. The patients are immobilized in a short-leg cast for two weeks and are then fitted for a posterior fiberglass splint.

Seventy-nine magnetic resonance (MR) studies of the knee were reviewed in an evaluation of the ability of MR imaging to demonstrate arthroscopically proved anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears. MR findings were also compared with the findings of two commonly applied clinical tests of ACL instability: the Lachman test and the anterior drawer test. The sensitivity of MR imaging was 94% (17 of 18), compared with 78% (14 of 18) for the anterior drawer test and 89% (16 of 18) for the Lachman test.

One hundred twenty knees were examined prospectively with both axial computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging to compare the value of these techniques in patients with clinical evidence of meniscal tears. Sixty-four of these knees were subsequently evaluated with diagnostic arthroscopy. In this group, CT was superior to MR imaging for meniscus evaluation in 29.

Four hundred and fifty patients (840 knees) underwent axial computed tomography of the knee in a prospective study to evaluate the ability of this technique to identify and characterize meniscal tears. One hundred and thirty-three of the knees subsequently had diagnostic arthroscopy. When compared with the findings at arthroscopy, the sensitivity of computed tomography was 96.

The viability of intramedullary canal bone reamings as a potential bone graft material was examined. Intramedullary bone reamings were obtained from the tibia or femur of three patients during intramedullary nailing procedures. Histologic examination showed bone marrow elements with complete disruption of the marrow compartmental organization.

The juvenile fracture of Tillaux.

Clin Orthop Relat Res

September 1986

The juvenile fracture of Tillaux is an ankle joint avulsion fracture of the anterior distal tibial tubercle in adolescents, produced by external rotation force applied to the foot. Data from five patients with the juvenile fracture of Tillaux were reviewed. In four of the patients, an initial closed reduction was unsuccessful and had to be followed by open reduction and internal fixation of the displaced fragment.

We randomly assigned patients with multiple trauma who had tibial or femoral fractures to one of two groups--one group received immediate fixation of all fractures, and the second group received conservative orthopedic management, consisting of traction or plaster casts. Studies were conducted twice each day for four days following injury. Mean cardiac index was 1.

Occipital arteriovenous fistulae may be congenital or traumatic. The distinguishing characteristics of each and diagnosis by dynamic computed tomographic (CT) scanning, obviating the need for angiography, is outlined and illustrated by a case report. The indications for surgery and operative approach are discussed.

Colorectal surgery performed with patients in the lithotomy position resulted in acute limb ischemia due to thrombosis of unrecognized peripheral aneurysms. A search of the literature failed to find this complication reported. It is postulated that the mechanism of injury is due to calf compression in the lithotomy position and/or external iliac artery compression by a retractor.
