Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the head and neck may metastasize in up to 5% of patients, with the parotid lymph nodes the most frequent site for spread. Metastases frequently show delayed presentation after the primary cancer had been treated. The optimum treatment should be surgery followed by adjuvant radiotherapy, with an appropriate parotidectomy, and preservation of the facial nerve if not involved by tumor and treatment to the neck.

The entry of ricin toxin into macrophages and certain other cell types in the spleen and liver results in toxin-induced inflammation, tissue damage and organ failure. It has been proposed that uptake of ricin into macrophages is facilitated by the mannose receptor (MR; CD206), a C-type lectin known to recognize the oligosaccharide side chains on ricin's A (RTA) and B (RTB) subunits. In this study, we confirmed that the MR does indeed promote ricin binding, uptake and killing of monocytes in vitro.

The sensitivity and specificity of in vivo magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is compared with production of protoporphyrin IX (PpIX), determined ex vivo, in a diffusely infiltrating glioma. A human glioma transfected with green fluorescent protein, displaying diffuse, infiltrative growth, was implanted intracranially in athymic nude mice. We demonstrate the broadening of fundamental resonance in terahertz metamaterial by successive insertion of metal rings in the original unit cell of a split ring resonator (SRR) forming an inter connected nested structure. With the subsequent addition of each inner ring, the fundamental resonance mode shows gradual broadening and blue shift. For a total of four rings in the structure the resonance linewidth is enhanced by a factor of four and the blue shift is as large as 316 GHz.

Purpose: Cellular receptor targeted imaging agents present the potential to target extracellular molecular expression in cancerous lesions; however, the image contrast in vivo does not reflect the magnitude of overexpression expected from in vitro data. Here, the in vivo delivery and binding kinetics of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) was determined for normal pancreas and AsPC-1 orthotopic pancreatic tumors known to overexpress EGFR.

We experimentally and numerically study the nature of coupling between laterally paired terahertz metamaterial split-ring resonators. Coupling is shown to modify the inductive-capacitive (LC) resonances resulting in either red or blue-shifting. Results indicate that tuning of the electric and magnetic coupling parameters may be accomplished not by changing the orientation or density of SRRs, but by a design modification at the unit cell level.

Purpose Of Review: Adults with intellectual disabilities are recognized globally as a group of individuals with poorer access to appropriate healthcare and have worse health outcomes than the general population, including significantly reduced life expectancy. This article reviews the evidence base published over the past 12-24 months, highlighting how public health policy is influencing the literature on the health needs of people with intellectual disabilities.

Recent Findings: Recent studies looking at information from death certificates found people with intellectual disabilities died 15 years younger than people without intellectual disabilities.

Molecular imaging technologies are advancing rapidly and optical techniques in particular are set to play a large role in preclinical pharmaceutical testing. These approaches, however, are generally unable to quantify the level of expression of imaging probe reporters. In this study a novel method of quantification is presented using dual-probe fluorescence imaging, where an endothelial growth factor receptor (EGFR) fluorescent probe was paired with a non-targeted probe before being injected, and tracer kinetic compartmental modeling was used to determine EGFR expression in a region of interest from the uptake curves of the two drugs in that region.

In this Letter, we present resonance properties in terahertz metamaterials consisting of a split-ring resonator array made from high-temperature superconducting films. By varying the temperature, we observe efficient metamaterial resonance switching and frequency tuning. The results are well reproduced by numerical simulations of metamaterial resonance using the experimentally measured complex conductivity of the superconducting film.

We present a novel approach of antireflection coating using metamaterials. It dramatically reduces the reflection and greatly enhances the transmission near a specifically designed frequency over a wide range of incidence angles for both transverse magnetic and transverse electric polarizations. National guidelines state that early-stage oropharyngeal carcinoma can be treated by either primary surgery or radiotherapy. There is a paucity of evidence comparing surgery versus non-surgical therapy within the same population. With the shift in head and neck cancer treatment towards primary chemoradiation, the aim of this observational cohort study was to help define whether surgery still has a role for early-stage oropharyngeal disease, using a national prospective audit of all new head and neck cancers recruited between 1999 and 2001 in Scotland.

Efforts to develop an effective vaccine against ricin are focused on the engineering of attenuated and stable recombinant forms of the toxin's enzymatic A subunit (RTA). While several candidate antigens are in development, vaccine design and efficacy studies are being undertaken in the absence of a fundamental understanding of those regions of RTA that are critical in eliciting protective immunity. In this present study, we produced and characterized a collection of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) directed against five distinct immunodominant regions on RTA, and used these MAbs to identify several key neutralizing epitopes on the toxin.

The influences of ZnO nanoparticles on cellular responses to activation of muscarinic receptors were studied in Chinese hamster ovary cells expressing the human M3 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor. ZnO particles (20 nm) induced cytotoxicity in a time and concentration-dependent manner: following a 24h exposure, toxicity was minimal at concentrations below 20 μg/ml but virtually complete at concentrations above 28 μg/ml. ZnO particles did not affect antagonist binding to M3 receptors or allosteric ligand effects, but increased agonist binding affinity while eliminating guanine nucleotide sensitivity.

Twenty elite senior players from an English Super League rugby league team underwent a total-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scan at 3 phases of a competitive season: preseason (February), midseason (June), and postseason (September). Body mass (BM), fat mass (FM), lean mass, percentage body fat, and bone mineral content (BMC) were reported at each phase.
