We previously reported that oral and intestinal absorption of insulin in rats and mice is significantly enhanced in vivo by coadministration with cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs). To evaluate the clinical use of CPPs as absorption enhancers, it is imperative to clarify the mechanisms associated with the permeation-stimulatory effect of CPPs in vitro. The confirmation experiment revealed a discrepancy between in vivo and in vitro effects of CPPs, such as D-octaarginine (D-R8) and L-penetratin, on epithelial permeation of insulin.

Background/aim: Currently, there are no established biomarkers to differentiate between glucocorticoid (GC)-resistant and GC-sensitive ulcerative colitis (UC); however, interleukin (IL)-1β could be one such candidate biomarker. The aim of this study was to investigate whether mucosally expressed IL-1β could predict the response to GC in patients with UC.

Methods: A total of 27 mucosal tissue samples from 10 patients with GC-resistant UC (GC-resistant group), 9 patients with GC-sensitive UC (GC-sensitive group), and 8 control patients (control group) were analyzed by qRT-PCR for the expression of IL-1β, GC receptor α (GRα), GRβ, and other inflammatory mediators.

We present a pulmonary sarcoidosis patient with specific elevation of serum Krebs von den lungen-6 (KL-6) levels, who was successfully treated with inhaled corticosteroids. Pulmonary sarcoidosis was initially identified as a chest radiograph abnormality during a routine medical examination, and subsequently confirmed by a high serum level of soluble interleukin 2 receptor. The patient was started on high-dose inhaled budesonide because of high serum levels of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and KL-6.

Since aortic aneurysms (AAs) are mostly asymptomatic, but they have a high mortality rate upon rupture, their detection and progression evaluation are clinically important issues. To discover diagnostic biomarkers for AA, we performed proteome analysis of aortic media from patients with thoracic atherosclerotic AA (TAAA), comparing protein levels between the aneurysm and normal tissue areas. After hierarchical clustering analysis of the proteome analysis data, tissue samples were classified into three groups, regardless of morphological features.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how pre-operative kidney conditions, such as chronic kidney disease (CKD) and acute kidney injury (AKI), affect the outcomes of emergency colorectal surgeries in patients across 38 Japanese hospitals from 2010 to 2017.
  • Researchers categorized patients into five groups based on their kidney function status and monitored in-hospital mortality as the main outcome, alongside other factors like use of vasoactive drugs and length of stay.
  • Findings revealed that patients with kidney issues had significantly higher mortality rates, with the ESRD group having the highest at 32.3%, highlighting the importance of assessing kidney function before emergency surgeries.
