Mast cell hyperplasia is observed in various inflammatory skin diseases. Although the mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of these conditions remains largely uninvestigated, it is speculated that mediators produced in the lesional skin provide a favorable microenvironment for mast cell growth. Among the proinflammatory mediators, leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), which shares a receptor component (gp130 subunit) with interleukin-6 (IL-6), has been identified as a mast cell growth-enhancing factor produced by cells of the keratinocyte-derived cell line (KCMH-1).

Our Nef amino acid sequences were aligned with a consensus subtype B, HXB2 reference strain and a consensus subtype C sequence. All were found to be highly homologous to subtype B in the central region of Nef, but more variable at the N and C termini of the molecule.

A total of 5482 genome survey sequences (GSSs) and 5582 ESTs were generated from mung bean nuclease (MBN) and cDNA libraries, respectively, of the ANKA line of the rodent malaria parasite Plasmodium berghei, and 10,874 GSSs generated from MBN libraries of the Salvador I and Belem lines of Plasmodium vivax, the most geographically wide-spread human malaria pathogen. These tags, together with 2438 Plasmodium falciparum sequences present in GenBank, were used to perform first-pass assembly and transcript reconstruction, and non-redundant consensus sequence datasets created.

Our current understanding of congenital transmission of Toxoplasma gondii from ewe to lamb dictates that infection frequently results in abortion and the death of the developing foetus, that the birth of live infected lambs occurs rarely and that the cat is the predominant source of infection in ewes. Using direct polymerase chain reaction detection of T. gondii, we report high levels of congenital transmission occurring in a commercially managed sheep flock.

Background: Low grade astrocytomas are among the most common central nervous system tumours in children.

The polypeptide Tams1 is an immunodominant major merozoite piroplasm surface antigen of the protozoan parasite Theileria annulata. Generation and selection of divergent antigenic types has implications for the inclusion of the Tams1 antigen in a subunit recombinant vaccine or use in the development of a diagnostic ELISA. In this study a total of 129 Tams1 sequences from parasites isolated in Bahrain, India, Italy, Mauritania, Portugal, Spain, Sudan, Tunisia and Turkey were obtained to estimate the extent of Tams1 diversity throughout a wide geographical range.
