The influence of duration of breastfeeding on bone mass in postmenopausal women of different age groups.

This study examines the influence of duration of breastfeeding on bone mineral density (BMD) and investigates the relationship between duration of breastfeeding and bone mass at four sites in postmenopausal women of different ages. A total of 509 postmenopausal women aged 45-86 years were included in the study. Patients were divided into three groups: never breastfed (n=67), < 96 months (n=157) and > or = 96 months (n=285); they were further classified into two age groups, 40-59 years (n=233) and 60-80 years (n=276).

Axillary lymphadenopathy as the primary presentation of primary peritoneal carcinoma.

The finding of isolated distant metastatic axillary lymphadenopathy without remarkable intra-abdominal disease is very unusual. We report on a patient with primary peritoneal serous carcinoma who initially presented with axillary lymphadenopathy, and was misdiagnosed as having primary breast cancer. In the case of an isolated axillary adenocarcinoma various kinds of immunohistochemical tests should be performed in order to elucidate the origin of the malignancy.

Nimesulide and diclofenac inhibit lipopolysaccharide-induced hypothermia and tumour necrosis factor-alpha elevation in rats.

The effects of nimesulide and diclofenac on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced rectal temperature changes and serum tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha elevation were investigated in rats. LPS (Escherichia coli O111:B4; 50 microg/kg, intraperitoneally) produces a dual body temperature response, in which initial hypothermia precedes fever. Serum TNF-alpha levels rise during the initial phase of the induced hypothermia.

Epithelioid trophoblastic tumor of the endocervix: a case report.

Background: It is difficult to recognize epithelioid trophoblastic tumor (ETT) as a trophoblastic disease because of its rarity and growth pattern simulating a carcinoma.

Case Report: A 36-year-old woman with stage IB(1) squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix and a high serum beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-hCG) level underwent radical hysterectomy with pelvic and para-aortic lymphadenectomy. However, light microscopic findings and immunohistochemical studies with pan-cytokeratin, epithelial membrane antigen, inhibin-alpha, beta-hCG, and human placental lactogen revealed ETT of the endocervix.

Microcystic adnexal carcinoma of the breast: a very rare breast skin tumor.

Background: Microcystic adnexal carcinoma is a rare, slowly progressing, malignant tumor of sweat gland origin.

Objective: A case of microcystic adnexal carcinoma of the breast with a history of 20 years is presented.

Methods: On initial examination, the ulcerative cutaneous mass was fixed to the underlying breast tissue and chest wall.

Primary renal lymphoma and xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis in childhood.

Primary renal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is very rare in childhood. A six-year-old boy presented with bilateral non-obstructive multinodular nephromegaly and renal failure. Percutaneous needle biopsy showed large-cell lymphoma.

Interleukin-1beta, tumor necrosis factor-alpha levels and neutrophil elastase activity in peri-implant crevicular fluid.

The aim of this study was to determine interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) levels and neutrophil elastase (NE) activity in peri-implant crevicular fluid (PICF) of smoker and nonsmoker patients, and to investigate their relationships with clinical parameters. A total of 42 endosseous root-form dental implants of 14 patients were clinically examined by modified Plaque index (PI), modified Gingival index (GI) and probing depth (PD). Smoking habits of the patients were recorded.

Large cavernous hemangioma of the kidney presenting as a solid renal mass.

We report a case of large renal hemangioma that completely filled the collecting system in a 43-year-old man. Most of the renal hemangiomas are small in size and this situation is extremely rare. The diagnosis and treatment of the case is discussed.

Posterior segmental osteotomy of maxillary edentulous ridge: an alternative to vertical reduction.

The posterior segmental maxillary osteotomy (PSMO) can be used as an alternative procedure to vertical reduction of the edentulous posterior maxilla. Surgical intrusion of the segment resulted in an adequate interarch space for prosthetic restoration without cortical bone loss and widening of the edentulous ridge and the mobilized keratinized mucosa as would be the case if vertical alveolar reduction had been performed.

A rare case of gingival myiasis caused by diptera (Calliphoridae).

Myiasis was first described by Hope in 1840. Since then, many cases of myiasis affecting different human organs have been reported. Oral myiasis is very rare in healthy persons but occurs mainly in the tropics and associated with inadequate public and personal hygiene.

Effects of low power laser and low dose amitriptyline therapy on clinical symptoms and quality of life in fibromyalgia: a single-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of low power laser (LPL) and low-dose amitriptyline therapy and to investigate effects of these therapy modalities on clinical symptoms and quality of life (QOL) in patients with fibromyalgia (FM). Seventy-five patients with FM were randomly allocated to active gallium-arsenide (Ga-As) laser (25 patients), placebo laser (25 patients), and amitriptyline therapy (25 patients). All groups were evaluated for the improvement in pain, number of tender points, skin fold tenderness, morning stiffness, sleep disturbance, muscular spasm, and fatigue.

Localized Castleman's disease and nephrotic syndrome not responsive to resection plus colchicine therapy.

We describe one patient with localized Castleman's disease (CD) of the mixed hyaline vascular and plasma cell type located at the mesentery of the small bowel, associated with systemic amyloidosis and nephrotic syndrome. A true nephrotic syndrome has rarely been reported in patients with CD. In the literature, it has been suggested that clinical and laboratory manifestations generally improved after surgical resection of the tumor.

Pentoxifylline attenuates reperfusion injury in testicular torsion.

Objectives: An experimental study was designed to evaluate the effects of pentoxifylline (Ptx) on lipid peroxidation, and histopathology in both testes after unilateral testicular torsion and detorsion.

Materials And Methods: Forty adult male albino Wistar rats were randomly divided into 4 groups of sham operation, sham operation with Ptx, torsion and detorsion, torsion and detorsion with Ptx. After intraperitoneal administration of Ptx at a dose of 50 mg/kg 15 min before torsion; right testes of the rats underwent 30 min of torsion and 30 min of detorsion.

The effects of selective cyclooxygenase-1 and cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors (valeryl salicylate and SC-58236, respectively) on Escherichia coli O111:B4 lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced dual thermoregulatory changes and serum tumor necrosis factor-alpha elevation were investigated in rats. LPS (50 microg/kg, intraperitoneal) produced an initial hypothermia that was then followed by fever. Serum tumor necrosis factor-alpha levels elevated at the initial phase of hypothermia.

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine IL-1beta and TNF-alpha levels in periapical exudates and to evaluate their relationship with clinical and radiological findings.

Methodology: Periapical exudates were collected from root canals of 35 single-rooted teeth using absorbent paper points. IL-1beta and TNF-alpha levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays.

A case report of multicentric Castleman's disease with simultaneous Epstein-Barr virus infection.

Castleman's disease is a rare B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder of unknown etiology. In this report we describe a 54-year-old woman with a 10-year history of asymptomatic bilateral, multiple cervical lymph node enlargements. She was not evaluated by lymph node biopsy during this period.

Inhibition of epidural scar tissue formation after spinal surgery: external irradiation vs. spinal membrane application.

Purpose: The scar tissue that forms after lumbar dissection is a severe complication and a cause of lumbar and radicular pain. It was recently shown that radiotherapy could inhibit peridural fibrosis after laminectomy. In this study, the efficiency of external irradiation was compared with spinal membrane application.

A new animal model for tissue preservation.

In vivo preservation of tissues may exist as a problem in experimental and clinical research. Adipose tissue, nerves, and vessels are the tissues that are usually preserved in vivo for future use or for the evaluation of results in experimental research. Limited volume and difficult conditions in such areas in animal models usually create disappointing results, because of the difficulty in distinguishing the experimental from the surrounding tissues; the insufficiency of the volume of space; and the lack of compliance in animals.

Multiple congenital epulis of the alveolar ridge and tongue.

Congenital granular cell tumor, also known as congenital epulis, is a very rare lesion seen in newborns. The typical presentation is a solitary nodule occurring on the gingiva of the anterior alveolar ridge of either jaw. Multiple-site involvement is seen very seldom but has been noted on the same or different alveolar ridges.

Background: Abdominal wall hernias have always been a major problem for general surgeons. The techniques of repairing primary, recurrent, and incisional hernias have evolved throughout the years at an accelerating trend, especially after production of prosthetic graft materials. Although looked upon with suspicion due to infection, fistula formation, and foreign body reaction, prosthetic graft materials are used deliberately in primary and recurrent hernias.
