Therapeutic drug monitoring of docetaxel administered for breast cancer in a patient receiving rifampicin and clarithromycin to treat nontuberculous mycobacteriosis: A case report.

Docetaxel is metabolized by cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4), and is transported by organic anion transporting peptides (OATPs) and ABCB1, and its blood concentration is known to affect the risk of some docetaxel-related adverse drug reactions (ADRs). Thus, the concomitant use of docetaxel with drugs that inhibit or induce these transporters or CYP3A4 requires careful attention. A 58-year-old woman was receiving clarithromycin (400 mg twice daily), rifampicin (450 mg once daily) and ethambutol (500 mg once daily) for nontuberculous mycobacteriosis.

Clinically Significant Prostate Cancer Prediction Using Multimodal Deep Learning with Prostate-Specific Antigen Restriction.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is a clinically heterogeneous disease. Predicting clinically significant PCa with low-intermediate prostate-specific antigen (PSA), which often includes aggressive cancers, is imperative. This study evaluated the predictive accuracy of deep learning analysis using multimodal medical data focused on clinically significant PCa in patients with PSA ≤ 20 ng/mL.

Daytime napping and depressive symptoms in bipolar disorder: A cross-sectional analysis of the APPLE cohort.

Background: The relationship between daytime napping and depression remains debatable. Thus, we investigated whether daytime napping is associated with depressive symptoms in patients with bipolar disorder.

Methods: In a cross-sectional study, we enrolled 204 outpatients with bipolar disorder who were participants in the Association between Pathology of Bipolar Disorder and Light Exposure in Daily Life (APPLE) cohort study.

The Current Status of Comprehensive Genomic Profiling in the Management of Metastatic Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer: A Study from a Cooperative Hospital for Cancer Genomic Medicine in Japan.

Background: Several effective treatment modalities against metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) are available; however, an unmet clinical need persists for mCRPC treatment because resistance to these therapies is inevitable. This study aimed to evaluate the status of comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP) and its impact on subsequent treatments for patients with mCRPC at our hospital.

Methods: Between December 2020 and August 2023, we assessed 41 patients with mCRPC who underwent CGP testing at the Nippon Medical School Hospital.

Caspase-4 promotes metastasis and interferon-γ-induced pyroptosis in lung adenocarcinoma.

Caspase-4 (CASP4) is a member of the inflammatory caspase subfamily and promotes inflammation. Here, we report that CASP4 in lung adenocarcinoma cells contributes to both tumor progression via angiogenesis and tumor hyperkinesis and tumor cell killing in response to high interferon (IFN)-γ levels. We observe that elevated CASP4 expression in the primary tumor is associated with cancer progression in patients with lung adenocarcinoma.

snRNAs from Radical Prostatectomy Specimens Have the Potential to Serve as Prognostic Factors for Clinical Recurrence after Biochemical Recurrence in Patients with High-Risk Prostate Cancer.

In patients with high-risk prostate cancer (HRPC) after radical prostatectomy (RP), biochemical recurrence (BCR) increases the risk of distant metastasis. Accordingly, additional prognostic biomarkers are required to identify the subpopulation of patients with HRPC who develop clinical recurrence (CR) after BCR. The objective of this study was to identify biomarkers in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) RP samples that are prognostic for CR in patients with HRPC who experience BCR after RP (post-RP BCR).

Blood pressure, pulse rate, and skin temperature during hot-water bathing in real-world settings among community-dwelling older adults: the HEIJO-KYO Study.

Background: Home hot-tub bathing substantially increases drowning mortality rates among older adults in Japan. Previous laboratory studies on hemodynamic responses during hot-tub bathing have been inconsistent depending on the thermal conditions. Furthermore, real-world hemodynamic changes that occur during bathing remain poorly understood.

Daily light exposure profiles and the association with objective sleep quality in patients with Parkinson's disease: The PHASE study.

Study Objectives: Light information crucially influences sleep initiation and continuity. The purpose of this study was to compare daily light exposure between patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and non-PD older adults and evaluate the association of daily light exposure with objective sleep measures in patients with PD.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study of 189 outpatients with PD and 1101 community-dwelling older adults (controls), daily light exposure was measured using wrist light meters during the daytime and light meters set in the bedrooms during the nighttime, and objective sleep quality was measured by wrist actigraphy.

Caspase-4 has a role in cell division in epithelial cells through actin depolymerization.

In addition to its role in pyroptosis and inflammatory cytokine maturation, caspase-4 (CASP4) also contributes to the fusion of phagosomes with lysosomes and cell migration. However, its role in cell division remains elusive. In this study, we demonstrate that CASP4 is indispensable for proper cell division in epithelial cells.

Assistive technologies and aging in place for people with dementia and disabilities: a proof-of-concept study with in-home passive remote monitoring with interactive communication functions.

Purpose: Can assistive technologies (ATs) support aging in place for people with dementia and disability? In seeking to go beyond the persistent institutional care delivery paradigm, this proof-of-concept study tested the feasibility of home care delivery using sensors and remote communication devices. This article reports the collaborative efforts among care professionals, care recipients and family caregivers in their private home environment and the impact of in-home passive remote monitoring (PRM) system on the users. The purpose of this study was to investigate the usability and impact of a PRM system combining in-house passive remote monitoring and an interactive communication function.

Disease-Modifying Drugs Extend Survival in Hereditary Transthyretin Amyloid Polyneuropathy.

Hereditary transthyretin (ATTRv) amyloidosis is a rare, fatal systemic disease, associated with polyneuropathy and cardiomyopathy, that is caused by mutant transthyretin (TTR). In addition to liver transplantation, several groundbreaking disease-modifying drugs (DMDs) such as tetrameric TTR stabilizers and TTR gene-silencing therapies have been developed for ATTRv amyloid polyneuropathy. They were based on a working hypothesis of the mechanisms of ATTRv amyloid formation.

Correlation between a commercial electrophysiological test of sudomotor function and intraepidermal nerve fiber density in hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis.

Introduction/aims: In the early stage, hereditary transthyretin (ATTRv) amyloidosis predominantly affects small nerve fibers, resulting in autonomic dysfunction and impaired sensation of pain and temperature. Evaluation of small fiber neuropathy (SFN) is therefore important for early diagnosis and treatment of ATTRv amyloidosis. Herein, we aimed to investigate the accuracy of a quick and non-invasive commercial sudomotor function test (SFT) for the assessment of SFN in ATTRv amyloidosis.

Post-Illumination Pupil Response and Sleep Quality in Patients With Glaucoma: The LIGHT Study.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate whether intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cell function evaluated using post-illumination pupil response (PIPR) in patients with glaucoma is associated with sleep quality.

Methods: This cross-sectional study measured the PIPR in 138 patients with glaucoma (mean age, 70.3 years) using pupil diameter after red and blue light exposure.

Effects of a violet-excitation light-emitting diode on melatonin secretion and sleepiness: preliminary findings from a randomized controlled trial.

Study Objectives: A new type of lighting using violet-excitation light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with an action spectrum centered at approximately 405 nm was developed. Although violet-excitation LEDs can reduce melatonin suppression compared with blue-excitation LEDs, no studies have compared the effects of violet-excitation LEDs with those of blue-excitation LEDs on melatonin suppression. This study was designed to compare the effects of violet-excitation LEDs with those of blue-excitation LEDs on melatonin suppression, psychomotor vigilance, and sleepiness.

Positive Association between Macular Pigment Optical Density and Glomerular Filtration Rate: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Although decreased macular pigment density is associated with the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), exactly how this decrease may contribute to the development of AMD is still not fully understood. In this study, we investigated the relationship between macular pigment optical density (MPOD) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). MPOD was measured using MPS II (Electron Technology, Cambridge, UK) in 137 participants who showed no clinical signs of AMD at 3 months after cataract surgery, and simple and multiple linear regression analyses were performed to determine the associations with age, sex, abdominal circumference, diabetes, hypertension, smoking, intraocular lens color, visual acuity before and after surgery, and eGFR.

A case of complete resection of prostate stromal sarcoma after neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Introduction: Prostatic stromal sarcoma is an extremely rare malignancy of the prostate with a poor prognosis.

Case Presentation: A 65-year-old man presented with dyschezia, and computed tomography showed a large prostate mass. The diagnosis was prostate stromal sarcoma by transrectal needle biopsy.

Association between circadian skin temperature rhythms and actigraphic sleep measures in real-life settings.

Study Objectives: Skin temperature manipulation with little or no change in core body temperature affects sleep-wake states; however, the association of 24-hour skin temperature variation with sleep quality has not been investigated in a large-scale population. We examined the association between the circadian rhythm of distal skin temperature and sleep quality in real-life settings and aimed to provide additional evidence of the link between thermoregulation and sleep-wake states.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study of 2,187 community-dwelling adults, we measured distal skin temperature at the ventral forearm at 3-minute intervals for 7 consecutive days to calculate nonparametric indicators of a circadian skin temperature rhythm, including intradaily variability, interdaily stability, and relative amplitude.

Risk of exposure of patients' family members to lenalidomide at home.

Objectives: Lenalidomide, a hazardous drug, has strict distribution controls. However, the risk of contamination with lenalidomide when patients take the drug has not been studied and the risk of drug exposure to people in the patient's living environment is unknown. Thus, we investigated the amount of lenalidomide that could be dispersed during the period between removal of the capsule and returning the used blister packages, and we considered the conditions under which lenalidomide could be dispersed and countermeasures.
