Background: The role of bronchoscopy in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a matter of debate.

Patients And Methods: This observational multicentre study aimed to analyse the prognostic impact of bronchoscopic findings in a consecutive cohort of patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19. Patients were enrolled at 17 hospitals from February to June 2020.

Glycogen Storage Disease 1a (GSD1a) is a rare, inherited metabolic disorder caused by deficiency of glucose 6-phosphatase (G6Pase-α). G6Pase-α is critical for maintaining interprandial euglycemia. GSD1a patients exhibit life-threatening hypoglycemia and long-term liver complications including hepatocellular adenomas (HCAs) and carcinomas (HCCs).

Article Synopsis
  • Sepsis negatively affects capillary function and oxygen delivery, potentially worsening patient outcomes.
  • Lower levels of immunoglobulin G2 do not contribute to severe flu complications, suggesting other factors may play a role in flu severity.
  • New research indicates that intravenous immunoglobulin may provide brain protection during sepsis by blocking harmful immune responses such as complement activation and apoptosis. *

The role of mannose-binding lectin (MBL) deficiency (MBL2; XA/O and O/O genotypes) in host defences remains controversial. The surfactant proteins (SP)-A1, -A2 and -D, other collectins whose genes are located near MBL2, are part of the first-line lung defence against infection. We analysed the role of MBL on susceptibility to pneumococcal infection and the existence of linkage disequilibrium (LD) among the four genes.

Background: Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is the leading cause of death from infection in developed countries. Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) and MBL-associated serine protease 2 (MASP-2) deficiencies are common primary immunodeficiencies the clinical penetrance of which remains controversial. MBL is a serum lectin that mediates phagocytosis and activates the lectin pathway of complement involving MASP-2.

The pituitary-specific transcription factor Pit-1/GHF-1 is a member of the POU domain family of regulatory proteins. It is involved in the commitment and expansion of the somatotropic cell lineage and activates the transcription of a set of anterior pituitary genes. We have cloned the human PIT1/GHF1 gene and characterized the regulatory mechanisms controlling its promoter activation and regulation.
