Cobalt hydroxides, Co(OH), have attracted considerable attention due to their diverse applications in the fields of energy and the environment. However, probing the electronic structure of Co(OH) is challenging, mainly due to its sensitivity to electron beam irradiation. In this study, we report the unperturbed O K-edge and Co L-edge for Co(OH) by electron beam damage and investigate the electronic structure transformation of Co(OH) under electron beam irradiation, using low current electron energy loss spectroscopy.

The prevalence of highly repetitive sequences within the human Y chromosome has prevented its complete assembly to date and led to its systematic omission from genomic analyses. Here we present de novo assemblies of 43 Y chromosomes spanning 182,900 years of human evolution and report considerable diversity in size and structure. Half of the male-specific euchromatic region is subject to large inversions with a greater than twofold higher recurrence rate compared with all other chromosomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Epitranscriptomic features, like single-base RNA editing, contribute to transcript diversity in cancer, but their spatial context in tumors is poorly understood.
  • The study introduces a method called Select-seq, which combines spatial-histopathological examination with transcriptomic sequencing to analyze regions of interest in tissue samples.
  • Using Select-seq, researchers focus on cancer stem cell-like microniches in triple-negative breast cancer to identify alternative splice variants and specific RNA editing patterns, particularly adenosine-to-inosine changes unique to different microniche groups.

Background: Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition characterized by rapid hair loss in the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes, for which treatments are limited. Baricitinib, an oral, selective, reversible inhibitor of Janus kinases 1 and 2, may interrupt cytokine signaling implicated in the pathogenesis of alopecia areata.

Methods: We conducted two randomized, placebo-controlled, phase 3 trials (BRAVE-AA1 and BRAVE-AA2) involving adults with severe alopecia areata with a Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) score of 50 or higher (range, 0 [no scalp hair loss] to 100 [complete scalp hair loss]).

Glucose hypometabolism in cortical structures after functional disconnection is frequently reported in patients with white matter diseases such as subcortical stroke. However, the molecular and cellular mechanisms have been poorly elucidated. Here we show, in an animal model of internal capsular infarct, that GABA-synthesizing reactive astrocytes in distant cortical areas cause glucose hypometabolism via tonic inhibition of neighboring neurons.

An increasing number of studies are focusing on the inflammatory response to alcohol as a potentially important determinant of hangover severity. In this article, data from two studies were re-evaluated to investigate the relationship between hangover severity and relevant biomarkers of alcohol metabolism, oxidative stress and the inflammatory response to alcohol. Hangover severity was significantly and positively correlated with blood concentrations of biomarkers of the inflammatory response to alcohol, in particular, Interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and C-reactive protein (CRP).

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a multifactorial, heterogeneous disease associated with epidermal barrier disruption and intense systemic inflammation. Previously, we showed that exosomes derived from human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASC-exosomes) attenuate AD-like symptoms by reducing multiple inflammatory cytokine levels. Here, we investigated ASC-exosomes' effects on skin barrier restoration by analyzing protein and lipid contents.
