Background: The tachykinin substance P (SP) facilitates learning and memory processes after its central administration. Activation of its different receptive sites, neurokinin-1 receptors (NK1Rs), as well as NK2Rs and NK3Rs, was shown to influence learning and memory. The basal ganglia have been confirmed to play an important role in the control of memory processes and spatial learning mechanisms, and as part of the basal ganglia, the globus pallidus (GP) may also be involved in this regulation.

The RFamide peptide family is a group of proteins that share a common C-terminal arginine-phenylalanine-amide motif. To date, the family comprises five groups in mammals: neuropeptide FF, LPXRFamides/RFamide-related peptides, prolactin releasing peptide, QRFP, and kisspeptins. Different RFamide peptides have their own cognate receptors and are produced by different cell populations, although they all can also bind to neuropeptide FF receptors with different affinities.

Dysfunction of subcortical D2-like dopamine receptors (DRs) can lead to positive symptoms of schizophrenia, and their analog, the increased locomotor activity in schizophrenia model MAM-E17 rats. The ventral pallidum (VP) is a limbic structure containing DRs. The DR antagonist sulpiride is a widespread antipsychotic drug, which can alleviate positive symptoms in human patients.
