Unlabelled: was to assess the effectiveness of infrared spectroscopy for verification of pulmonary embolism (PE) and a number of similar diseases.

Materials And Methods: Infrared spectroscopy was used to investigate blood serum of 19 healthy volunteers and 30 patients with intraoperatively confirmed PE as well as with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (n=10), pneumonia (n=10), tuberculosis (n=10), lung abscess (n=10) and lung cancer (n=10), acute disorder of cerebral circulation (ADCC) (n=10), ischemic heart disease (IHD) (n=10). Peak height ratios of absorption band were taken as diagnostic parameters (cm/сm): P - 1160/1165; P - 1165/1070; P - 1165/1150; P - 1165/1050; P - 1100/1050; P - 1025/1165.

Long-term caloric restriction (CR) has been reported to extend the life spans, delay the onset and decrease the incidence of a broad spectrum of age-associated diseases. However, its effect on rat explorative behaviour is still unclear. In the present study, a number of behavioural measures were continuously monitored in 3-, 12-, 24-25-, 28-29- and 35-44-month-old male Wistar rats that were fed either ad libitum or placed on a caloric restricted diet.

Because reduction of sphingomyelin and ceramide accumulation in aging are associated with the development of a wide variety of pathologies, finding the ways of normalizing the sphingolipid exchange is becoming actual. As the ASM is a key enzyme of the sphingolipid exchange, in the present study we have investigated the effect of an ASM inhibitor imipramine on the ceramide and sphingomyelin content in the tissues of old rats. The introduction of imipramine elevates the sphingomyelin level and reduces the ceramide/sphingomyelin ratio in the liver, heart and brain of old rats.
