The structure and magnetic properties of epitaxial Heusler alloy films (CoFeGe) deposited on MgO (100) substrates were investigated. Films of 60 nm thickness were prepared by magnetron co-sputtering at different substrate temperatures (T), and those deposited at room temperature were later annealed at various temperatures (T). X-ray diffraction confirmed (001) [110] CoFeGe || (001) [100] MgO epitaxial growth.

Heusler-type magnetic shape memory alloys (MSMAs) exhibit a martensitic transformation (MT) accompanied by a complex magnetic reordering, strongly affected by an intricate martensitic microstructure. The hierarchic twin structure of martensite, formed as a result of minimization of elastic energy down to atomic scale, is under intensive study nowadays. On the other hand, the much more sophisticated problem of the relationship between nanoscale twin structure and the magnetism in MSMAs has being tackled only recently.

Magnetic shape memory alloys are under intensive investigation due to their unusual physical properties, such as magnetic shape memory effect, magnetic field induced superelasticity, direct and inverse magnetocaloric effect etc., promising for novel applications. One of the intriguing properties of these materials in a single phase state is a giant magnetoresistance.

The spin wave dynamics in patterned magnetic nanostructures is under intensive study during the last two decades. On the one hand, this interest is generated by new physics that can be explored in such structures. On the other hand, with the development of nanolithography, patterned nanoelements and their arrays can be used in many practical applications (magnetic recording systems both as media and read-write heads, magnetic random access memory, and spin-torque oscillators just to name a few).
