Introduction: Interscalene and subacromial infusion of local anesthetics have both been shown to be effective in alleviating pain after shoulder arthroscopy. We performed a prospective randomized clinical trial in which both methods were compared in patients after acromioplasty.

Methods: Forty patients received a subacromial (n = 20) or an interscalene (n = 20) continuous infusion of 2% ropivacaine (2 mL/h) after arthroscopic acromioplasty.

We obtained postoperative blood concentrations of Co, Cr, Mo, Ti, Al and Nb in 75 patients undergoing primary THA at our institution between January 1998 and December 2000. All patients were treated with the same prosthetic device (Alloclassic VARIALLTM, Zimmer, Winterthur, Switzerland) using three types of articulations: metal-on-metal (METASULTM ), ceramic-on-ceramic (CERASULTM) and metal-on-cross linked polyethylene (DURASULTM). 25 patients out of each articulation-group were evaluated by blood analysis 24-38 months after surgery.

The Chevron osteotomy was described in 1976. There have, however, been only short- to mid-term follow-up reviews, often with small numbers of patients. We looked at 112 feet (73 patients) with a minimum follow-up of ten years following Chevron osteotomy with a distal soft-tissue procedure.

A multicenter study on fibrous dysplasia of bone (FD) was promoted by the European Pediatric Orthopaedic Society in 1999 in order to gain insight into the natural history of the disease and to evaluate current diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. We collected and reviewed clinical, radiographic, pathological, and molecular genetic data when possible, from a total of 64 cases diagnosed as either monostotic FD (MFD), polyostotic FD (PFD), or McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS), evaluated or treated in 11 participating centers. Results from the initial analysis of the series indicate five main points: (1) Significant diagnostic pitfalls affect the diagnosis of MFD and, to a lesser extent, PFD in orthopedic centers and allied radiology and pathology facilities, which may be circumvented by the adoption of stringent diagnostic criteria, and in some cases by the analysis of FD-associated GNAS1 mutations.

To test the hypothesis that the reproducibility of radiographic measurements of the first metatarsophalangeal angle and the intermetatarsal angle I-II can be increased by exact guidelines, we calculated the intra- and interobserver reliability of both methods. 4 independent observers (2 senior residents and 2 orthopedic trainees) evaluated 50 pre- and 50 postoperative plain dorsoplantar radiographs with their method of preference and then with Mitchell et al.'s method (1958).
