Waist height ratio: A universal screening tool for prediction of metabolic syndrome in urban and rural population of Haryana.

Aims: To compare waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), waist hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and define an appropriate cut-off, which is most closely predictive of the non-adipose components of the IDF metabolic syndrome (MetS) definition.

Methods And Results: A total of 3,042 adults (1,693 in rural area and 1,349 in urban area) were screened for the presence of MetS according to the IDF definition. Among 3,042 adults selected as subjects, 1,518 were male and 1,524 were female.

Nephrocalcinosis: a rare presenting manifestation of primary Sjögren's syndrome.

Renal involvement in primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is not uncommon. Autoimmune tubulointerstitial disorders and distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA) account for majority of the cases of renal involvement. While dRTA may precede the onset of sicca syndrome in pSS, nephrocalcinosis as a presenting manifestation of pSS is rare.

Antibiotic susceptibility of bacterial isolates in gingivitis and periodontitis.

The present study was conducted to isolate aerobic as well as anaerobic microbes from patients of gingivitis and adult periodontitis and to study the susceptibility patterns of these isolates to different antibiotics. In our study all the samples belonging to the control as well as the study groups yielded microbes. Aerobes and facultative anaerobes were isolated from 100 percent and 96 percent cases of normal gingiva and orodental infections respectively.

Polymicrobial etiology of dental caries.

The present study was carried out to establish the normal bacterial oral flora and the aerobic and anaerobic bacterial flora from deep seated dental caries, and to determine the antimicrobial sensitivity of the clinical isolates so obtained Streptococcus mutans (48%) and Streptococcus sanguis (20%) were the main aerobic isolates whereas Lactobacillus spp. (52%), Veillonella spp. (24%) and Actinomyces spp.
