Neurodegenerative diseases pose a significant health challenge for the elderly. The escalating presence of toxic metals and chemicals in the environment is a potential contributor to central nervous system dysfunction and the onset of neurodegenerative conditions. Transition metals play a crucial role in various pathophysiological mechanisms associated with prevalent neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

Activation of glutathione reductase, decrease of the glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutases activity was observed. This shows a specific disturbance in the functioning of the antioxidant defense system and the augmentation in the concentration of one of the major first line reacting cytokin (IL-1beta).

The development of diabetes is accompanied by oxidative stress, which results in the activation of lipid peroxidation processes and the increase in the amount of nitrogen oxide and the activity of antioxidant protection system enzymes. The increase of the amount of saturated fatty acid and fall in the amount of unsaturated fatty acid has been detected.
