Background: With the seemingly increasing trend of childhood hypertension, high serum uric acid (SUA) levels might be an indicator of essential hypertension among adolescents.

Objective: To determine the SUA levels of hypertensive students and randomly selected controls and find the association, if any, between SUA level and blood pressure (BP) among secondary school students in Ido-Osi Local Government Area (LGA).

Article Synopsis
  • - Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a major genetic disorder that can lead to serious complications, including eye problems that may result in blindness, with limited understanding of how these ocular issues relate to disease severity among children.
  • - A study examined 120 children aged 5 to 15 with SCD in a Nigerian hospital, finding that 60.0% had one or more ocular abnormalities, with a slightly higher prevalence in those with moderate disease compared to mild disease, but the difference was not statistically significant.
  • - The findings suggest that eye problems are common among children with SCD regardless of disease severity, indicating the need for regular eye screenings for these patients.

Background: Beta (β)-endorphins are endogenous neuropeptides found in the plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of humans but there have been reports of the relationship between the plasma and CSF β-endorphin levels in different clinical conditions. However, the relationship between β-endorphin levels in the plasma and CSF of children with cerebral malaria (CM) has not been reported.

Aim: To determine the relationship between β-endorphin levels in the CSF and plasma of children with CM.
