Article Synopsis
- Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (ω-3 PUFA) supplementation during pregnancy was studied to evaluate its impact on inflammation and oxidative stress in a preterm labor model.
- In experiments with pregnant mice, those on a 5% fish oil diet exhibited elevated inflammation markers and increased oxidative stress compared to normal diet counterparts after exposure to lipopolysaccharide (LPS).
- In vitro tests showed that treatments with ω-3 PUFAs, specifically docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), also led to heightened oxidative stress in macrophage-like cells.
