In a placebo-controlled clinical trial, the dietary supplement XP-828L (commercialized as Dermylex) demonstrated potential to reduce symptoms associated with mild-to-moderate psoriasis at a dose regimen of 5 g daily for 56 days. However, recent in vivo data in humans and animals suggest a daily dose of 800 mg could be more efficient than a 5-g dose. However, no well-structured clinical study has confirmed this hypothesis.

Three bacteriocin-producing bifidobacterial isolates from newborns were identified as Bifidobacterium thermacidophilum (two strains) and B. thermophilum (one strain). This study was undertaken to evaluate the ability of these strains to compete with food-borne Listeria monocytogenes for adhesion and invasion sites on Caco-2 and HT-29 cells.

An immuno-culture method has been developed by combination of specific monoclonal antibodies and plate culture to allow detection of viable bifidobacteria. Cell wall proteins were selected as surface antigen to produce antibodies against bifidobacteria. The cell wall proteins were extracted and purified from six ATCC strains of bifidobacteria grown in MRS broth using an anaerobic system.

Aims: This study aimed to characterize new isolates of human bifidobacteria, evaluate some of their probiotic potential and to screen these isolates for their effectiveness at inhibiting Listeria monocytogenes in vitro.

Methods And Results: Thirty-four Bifidobacterium isolates from infant faeces were identified by fructose-6-phosphate phosphoketolase and PCR. Six isolates, coded RBL67, RBL68, RBL69, RBL70, RBL85 and RBL86, showed higher antagonistic activity against L.

Six commercial disinfectants were tested for their efficacy in inactivating hepatitis A virus in solution or attached to agri-food surfaces. Disinfectant I contains 10% quaternary ammonium plus 5% glutaraldehyde; disinfectant II contains 12% sodium hypochlorite; disinfectant III contains 2.9% dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid plus 16% phosphoric acid; disinfectant IV contains 10% quaternary ammonium; disinfectant V contains 2% iodide; and disinfectant VI contains 2% stabilized chlorine dioxide.
