Introduction: The young age of patients, total arthroplasties complications risks, and implant costs justify evaluation of the results of core decompression in the treatment of sickle-cell disease avascular necrosis of the femoral head (ONFH).

Hypothesis: In sickle-cell disease necrosis, core decompression offers good relief from pain and delays the use of total arthroplasty in comparison to a conservatively treated control group by a simple non-weight bearing protocol.

Materials And Methods: From 1994 to 2008, among 215 drepanocytic adults, 42 patients (22 genotype SS, 20 genotype SC; 15 men, 27 women) presented symptomatic ONFH.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the frequency of multifocal osteonecrosis in patients with sickle cell disease. Between 1980 and 1989, 200 patients with sickle cell disease were treated in our institution for osteonecrosis. The patient population consisted of 102 males and 88 females with a mean age of twenty-six years at the time of presentation (range, eighteen to thirty-five years) and was followed until the year 2005.

We wished to determine whether total knee replacement (TKA) performed by young surgeons increased rates of mortality and complications compared with TKA performed by senior surgeons using the same model of arthroplasty. There were no significant pre-operative differences between the groups in terms of age, gender, height, weight, body mass index, diagnosis, comorbidity and duration of follow-up, which was a mean of 15 years in both groups. Hence, we assessed the 15 year survival of the first 150 Ceraver Posterior-Stabilized total knee arthroplasties undertaken by young surgeons (aged of less than 30 years) in formation in a single university hospital setting (Group B).

A series of six elbows with aseptic osteonecrotic lesions is reported in a population of sickle cell anemic patients. Pain and range of motion limitation were the most commonly observed symptoms during the course of the disease. Three of these elbows had to undergo a surgical procedure (core decompression or loose body excision).

Purpose Of The Study: The purpose of this study was to determine the functional, clinical and radiographic results obtained with total knee arthroplasty (TKA) preserving both cruciate ligaments using the Hermès prosthesis with a fixed plateau. Mid-term results at eight years mean follow-up were compared with the outcome achieved at the same follow-up with posterior-stabilized (PS) Hermès TKA with a fixed bearing.

Material And Methods: The results of a continuous series of 41 TKA with bicruciate preservation implanted between 1991 and 1994 with and extra-articular distractor were analyzed at one and eight years follow-up using the IKS scores and radiographic findings.
