To obtain an objective basis for a policy on the advice to patients on when to drive after anterior tension-free hernia repair. Foot reaction time before operation and on the 2nd postoperative day in 20 skilled male drivers with a right inguinal hernia was measured and compared with that of 30 normal subjects. The tests in a car simulator indicated that an untreated right inguinal hernia had no effect on emergency stop reaction time and that a plug-mesh hernia repair did not impair reaction time on the 2nd postoperative day (P>0.

In order to assess the extent of errors and to provide correction factors for gamma camera gastric emptying studies of liquid meals labelled with radionuclides (99Tcm or 113Inm), a series of phantom studies were performed with different gastric emptying procedures, gamma cameras and data handling systems. To validate the overall accuracy of the method, 24 combined aspiration and gamma camera gastric emptying studies were carried out in three normal volunteers. Gastric meal volume, expressed as a percentage of the original volume of the meal ingested was underestimated due to scattered radiation from the stomach.

Using a gamma camera, gastric emptying of a nutrient liquid meal labelled with 99m-Tc-DTPA has been studied in 88 normal subjects in order to assess reproducibility and to establish the range for gastric emptying under standardized conditions. The emptying patterns were visualized as time-activity curves. The early phase (0-15 min) was characterized by a rapid emptying taking place during the first minutes and a subsequent period of almost no emptying (plateau) lasting for up to 20 minutes, followed by an almost constant emptying in the later phase (15-60 min).

The effect of pancreatic glucagon (G) and its 1-21 fragment (G 1-21) on gastric emptying was studied in nine healthy volunteers. Gastric emptying of a 200-ml nutrient liquid meal was assessed during continuous infusion of physiologic saline, G, or G 1-21 in equimolar concentrations. The subjects were studied three times on separate days in randomized order.

The clinical efficiency and patient acceptability of peroral colonic lavage with a 3 liters balanced electrolyte solution (BES), when performed either at the hospital on the day of colonoscopy or during the preceding evening in the patient's home, was evaluated in 62 consecutive outpatients. No significant difference was found between adequacy of bowel preparation, when the lavage was performed in the patient's home or at the hospital. The bowel preparation was found to be satisfactory in 61% and 77% of the patients.
