Light- and nitrogen-use change was examined along productivity gradients in natural grasslands at Laelatu, western Estonia, both at community level and in most abundant species. Aboveground biomass (M) ranged from 341 to 503 g m(-2) in wet (W) and from 248 to 682 g m(-2) in dry (D) community. Aboveground leaf area ratio (aLAR) decreased with rising M in D site, while it increased in W site.

Acclimation of foliage photosynthetic properties occurs with varying time kinetics, but structural, chemical and physiological factors controlling the kinetics of acclimation are poorly understood, especially in field environments. We measured chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics, leaf total carotenoid (Car), chlorophyll (Chl) and nitrogen (N) content and leaf dry mass per area (LMA) along vertical light gradients in natural canopies of the herb species, Inula salicina and Centaurea jacea, and tree species, Populus tremula and Tilia cordata, in the middle of the growing season. Presence of stress was assessed on the basis of night measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence.

The effect of elevated CO(2) and O(3) on apparent quantum yield (varphi), maximum photosynthesis (P(max)), carboxylation efficiency (V(cmax)) and electron transport capacity (J(max)) at different canopy locations was studied in two aspen (Populus tremuloides) clones of contrasting O(3) tolerance. Local light climate at every leaf was characterized as fraction of above-canopy photosynthetic photon flux density (%PPFD). Elevated CO(2) alone did not affect varphi or P(max), and increased J(max) in the O(3)-sensitive, but not in the O(3)-tolerant clone.

Stomatal density and size were measured along the light gradient of a Betula pendula Roth. canopy in relation to microclimatic conditions. The theoretical stomatal conductance was calculated using stomatal density and dimensions to predict to what degree stomatal conductance is related to anatomical properties and relative stomatal opening.
