Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is associated with high mortality. Lung-protective ventilation is the current standard of care in patients with ARDS, but it might lead to hypercapnia, which is independently associated with worse outcomes. Extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCOR) has been proposed as an adjuvant therapy to avoid progression of clinical severity and limit further ventilator-induced lung injury, but its use in COVID-19 has not been described yet.

In this paper an extended version of IWA's Activated Sludge Model No 3 (ASM3) was developed to simulate processes in waste stabilisation ponds (WSP). The model modifications included the integration of algae biomass and gas transfer processes for oxygen, carbon dioxide and ammonia depending on wind velocity and a simple ionic equilibrium. The model was applied to a pilot-scale WSP system operated in the city of Florianópolis (Brazil).

Transabdominal ultrasound is the most commonly performed initial examination for intestinal diseases and due to its high availability and the absence of side effects from ionic radiation, it is ideal for serial examinations. New techniques such as tissue harmonic imaging combined with the use of contrast media appear to increase the diagnostic accuracy. For diverticulitis, infectious colitis and intestinal tumours, there is as yet a lack of data.

We report on a 19-year-old woman with polyglandular autoimmune syndrome type II (APS II). She was diagnosed with addison's disease and hypothyroidism due to chronic autoimmune thyroiditis. Her mother had celiac disease and her brohter had diabetes mellitus typ 1.

Thermophilic anaerobic digestion in compact systems can be an economical and ecological reasonable decentralised process technique, especially for rural areas. Thermophilic process conditions are important for a sufficient removal of pathogens. The high energy demand, however, can make such systems unfavourable in terms of energy costs.
