Article Synopsis
  • Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a serious condition that links liver damage to brain dysfunction, often causing oxidative stress and inflammation.
  • The study explored the protective effects of Mirabegron (Mira), a drug with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, against liver and brain injuries induced by thioacetamide (TAA) in rats.
  • Results showed that Mira improved motor skills, reduced ammonia levels, and lessened liver and brain damage by promoting antioxidant defenses and reducing inflammation and cell death while activating neuroprotective pathways.

Background: Total neoadjuvant therapy (TNT) before surgical intervention represents a unique therapeutic approach for the management of locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) and has witnessed a notable rise in utilization within recent years. However, the efficacy and safety of this treatment remain subjects of ongoing debate and investigation. This randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate the potential impact of administering induction chemotherapy (IC) before the conventional neoadjuvant concomitant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) in LARC patients.

Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a common complication in patients receiving allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). GVHD is characterized as either acute or chronic based on symptomatology and histopathological findings. Despite advancements in disease-targeting therapeutics, steroid-refractory GVHD remains a significant contributor to mortality in HSCT recipients, highlighting the gaps in our understanding of its pathophysiology and treatment strategies.

Background: Breast cancer (BC) patients have a higher chance of survival if it is diagnosed at an early stage, which is essential for efficient treatment of the condition. The results of an elevated risk of cancer, including BC, previously associated with the ins/del polymorphism rs145204276 in the promoter region of growth arrest-specific 5 (GAS5) are still up for debate. Thus, this study aimed to appraise the frequency of the GAS5 rs145204276 variant with BC risk and demonstrate the potential impact of the sirtuin 1 (SIRT-1), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and microRNA-182 (miR-182) expression and their diagnostic value in BC.

Background & Aims: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), involving both Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), represents a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory disease due to an uncontrolled, ongoing inflammatory response to intestinal bacteria in those with genetic susceptibility. MicroRNA (miRNA) extrusion from relevant remote organs or tissues is reflected in the expression of miRNAs in serum and plasma. Both UC and CD patients had higher blood levels of expressed miR-199a.
