Bovine serum albumin (BSA) hydrogels are non-immunogenic, low-cost, biocompatible, and biodegradable. In order to avoid toxic cross-linking agents, gellan was oxidized with NaIO to obtain new functional groups like dialdehydes for protein-based hydrogel cross-linking.
