11 patients with confirmed chronic HCV-hepatitis were treated with high-dose interferon. 12 matched controls were treated conventionally. Higher response was registered in patients on the interferon treatment.

Hepatitis C was treated with interferon alpha in chronic alcoholics and control subjects without alcoholism. The results show that ethanol is an independent risk factor in natural progression of chronic hepatitis C. Moreover, it dose-dependently reduces probability of getting a reliable response to interferon therapy.

Patients with markers of replication of chronic HCV-infection and normal level of alanine transaminase received antiviral monotherapy with interferon. Clinical, biochemical, virological data were compared to morphometric examinations of the hepatic biopsy at different stages of interferon therapy. Relevant correlations with the controls were made.
