Pattern of Emergency Presentation of Patients with Breast Cancer at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

Background: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy affecting women in Nigeria. Presentation is usually elective. However, some patients present as an emergency with complications of the disease and its treatment.

Fibrinolytic changes in pregnant women on highly active antiretroviral therapy.

Objectives: To report on the changes in fibrinolytic activity in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected pregnant women who are undergoing highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART).

Methods: Blood was collected from 50 HIV positive women on HAART (test subjects), and 50 HIV positive women not on HAART (controls). These women were attending the prevention of mother to child clinic (PMTCT) of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Nigeria from January to June 2014.

Intussusception in pregnancy--a rarely considered diagnosis.

Intussusception in pregnancy is rare and making a preoperative diagnosis is extremely difficult. The objective of this paper is to report a case of intussusception in a pregnant woman and to review the literature on the subject with a view to highlighting the peculiarities of this condition. The case file of a 26 year old Gravida 3, Para(0+2) lady who had appendectomy 5 years earlier and now presented at 33 weeks of gestation with features of intestinal obstruction was evaluated.

Small bowel obstruction following perforation of the uterus at induced abortion.

Background: Unsafe abortion is an important contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality.

Objective: To present a case of small bowel obstruction following perforation of the uterus at induced abortion.

Methods: A 36-year-old woman, presented at a private hospital, with abdominal pain and weight loss.

Gastric carcinoma--a big challenge in a poor economy.

Background: Gastric carcinoma is usually characterized with significant morbidity and mortality mainly because of late presentation. Late presentation of gastric carcinoma is a prominent feature in developing and poor countries.

Aim Of Study: The purpose of this study is to present our experience with the pattern and outcome of gastric tumors at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Nigeria; with emphasis on late presentation of the patients.
