Impact of a product-specific reference standard for the measurement of a PEGylated rFVIII activity: the Swiss Multicentre Field Study.

Introduction: Measuring factor VIII (FVIII) activity can be challenging when it has been modified, such as when FVIII is pegylated to increase its circulating half-life. Use of a product-specific reference standard may help avoid this issue.

Aim: Evaluate the impact of using a product-specific reference standard for measuring the FVIII activity of BAX 855 - a pegylated FVIII - in eight of Switzerland's main laboratories.

HPA-genotyping and antiplatelet antibodies in female blood donors.

Cases of passive alloimmune thrombocytopenia have been reported due to transfusions of blood products with antiplatelet antibodies. The aim of our study was to search for antiplatelet antibodies in HPA-homozygous blood donor women once pregnant and also to perform, in case of positivity, a retrospective analysis of platelet counts of the recipients of their blood products. HPA-1, -2, -3 and -5 genotyping were performed on 500 platelet donors (42% women).

Evaluation of a new antigen capture ELISA for detection and characterization of platelet alloantibodies.

The monoclonal antibody-specific immobilization of platelet antigens (MAIPA) assay is considered as a possible reference method for the detection of maternal alloantibodies when a foetomaternal alloimmunization is suspected. However, this method is tedious.
