Ethics practices associated with reusing health data: an assessment of patient registries.

Background: As routinely collected patient data have become increasingly accessible over the years, more attention has been directed at the ethics of using such data for research. Patient data is often available to researchers through patient registries that typically collect data of patients with a specific condition. While ethical guidelines for using patient data are presented frequently in the literature, it is currently unknown how patient registries implement the recommendations from these guidelines in practice and how they communicate their practices.

Exploring health-related quality of life, exercise and alcohol use in adolescents with sickle cell disease and healthy siblings.

Objective: This study explored the health-related quality of life (HRQL) and health behaviours of adolescents with sickle cell disease (SCD) and healthy siblings, drawing on Gap theory which suggests HRQL is the discrepancy between current and ideal selves.

Design: Twenty-three adolescents with SCD and 21 healthy siblings aged 13 to 17 years participated in eight focus groups.

Results: Thematic analysis identified three themes: learning to accept SCD, coping with SCD and influences on health behaviours.

I saw the "breast within a breast" sign.

The "breast within a breast" sign is used to describe the appearance of a breast hamartoma, also known as a fibroadenolipoma. A breast hamartoma is a benign mass made up of the same tissues that are found in a normal breast, giving the appearance of a breast within a breast on mammography. The "breast within a breast" sign is pathognomonic for a breast hamartoma and can help confidently diagnose these masses as benign without the need for further imaging or biopsy.

Preregistration in practice: A comparison of preregistered and non-preregistered studies in psychology.

Preregistration has gained traction as one of the most promising solutions to improve the replicability of scientific effects. In this project, we compared 193 psychology studies that earned a Preregistration Challenge prize or preregistration badge to 193 related studies that were not preregistered. In contrast to our theoretical expectations and prior research, we did not find that preregistered studies had a lower proportion of positive results (Hypothesis 1), smaller effect sizes (Hypothesis 2), or fewer statistical errors (Hypothesis 3) than non-preregistered studies.
