Stakeholder Views on Novel Consent Forms for an Acute Stroke Trial.

Lengthy consent forms are poorly suited for clinical trials in emergency contexts; however, innovations in consent processes are challenging to implement. A previously developed, context-sensitive consent form and information sheet were approved by a single institutional review board (sIRB) of record for use in a multisite stroke treatment clinical trial. This study sought views on using these materials by research teams and representatives from local institutional review boards (IRBs) and human research protection programs (HRPPs).

Unveiling the psychosocial and academic implications of living with sickle cell disease among undergraduates in a private university in Nigeria.

Background: Sickle cell disease (SCD), a disease characterized with abnormal red blood cell morphology and is associated with diverse clinical manifestations and contribute to many psychosocial problems like social stigma, strained relationships and reduced self-esteem. SCD is highly prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa, with Nigeria having the largest burden. This qualitative study is aimed at exploring possible psychosocial and academic challenges associated with sickle cell disease among undergraduates in Nigeria.

An examination of daily CO emissions prediction through a comparative analysis of machine learning, deep learning, and statistical models.

Human-induced global warming, primarily attributed to the rise in atmospheric CO, poses a substantial risk to the survival of humanity. While most research focuses on predicting annual CO emissions, which are crucial for setting long-term emission mitigation targets, the precise prediction of daily CO emissions is equally vital for setting short-term targets. This study examines the performance of 14 models in predicting daily CO emissions data from 1/1/2022 to 30/9/2023 across the top four polluting regions (China, India, the USA, and the EU27&UK).

The effect of bitter honey against cerebral malaria-induced inflammasome cell death: network pharmacology-based in silico evaluation.

Cerebral malaria (CM) is a fatal complication of Plasmodium falciparum infection. The biological and physiological links between CM, inflammation, and inflammasome, point to the complexity of its pathology. Resistance to available and affordable drugs, worsening economic crisis, and urgent need for integration of orthodox with traditional/alternative medicine, actualized the search for sustainable pharmacotherapy.

Approaches to management of HIT in complex scenarios, including cardiac surgery.

Although heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) presents management challenges for any population, it adds complexity to the management of certain patient populations, including those undergoing cardiac surgery and those with refractory HIT and/or acute bleeding. For each of these scenarios, we review alternative management strategies when standard therapies-heparin cessation and the initiation of a nonheparin anticoagulant-are either insufficient or not practicable. In patients with HIT undergoing cardiac surgery, we review the clinical experience for heparin reexposure using therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) or antiplatelet therapy.
