Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF), caused by ovine herpesvirus 2 (OvHV-2), is an important cause of mortality in ranched American bison and domestic cattle in North America. Previous studies showed that bison can be infected by intranasal nebulization with sheep nasal secretions containing OvHV-2 and provided preliminary information on viral doses required for infection and disease progression. The goals of this study were to establish optimal minimal infectious and minimal lethal doses of OvHV-2 by the intranasal route in bison, evaluate the influence of dose on incubation period and other clinical parameters and determine if bison seropositive for antibody against MCF-group viruses are resistant to developing MCF after intranasal challenge.

The authors wished to dissect the contribution of the acidosis versus hypercapnia per se to the effects of hypercapnic acidosis on the hemodynamic profile and severity of lung injury induced by systemic sepsis.
Methods: In the hypercapnic acidosis series, adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized to normocapnia or hypercapnic acidosis-produced by adding 5% carbon dioxide to the inspired gas-and cecal ligation and puncture performed.
Objective: Prolonged hypercapnia is commonly encountered during the treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome and acute respiratory failure attributable to other causes with protective ventilation strategies. In these circumstances, compensatory renal buffering returns pH to normal establishing a condition of buffered hypercapnia. It is also common intensive care practice to correct the pH more rapidly using bicarbonate infusions.

All deer were observed antemortem and seemed to be blind. Post-mortem examination revealed gross lesions of bilateral keratoconjunctivitis and/or panophthalmitis in the first two deer, but only partial retinal detachment in the third deer.

The current report describes 4 episodes of tularemia in 3 range flocks in Wyoming and South Dakota in 1997 and 2007 (1 flock was affected twice). Flock owners reported that ticks were unusually numerous and commonly present on sheep during outbreaks.

Materials And Methods: Isolated rat, mouse and human colonic tissue mucosae and Caco-2 monolayers were exposed to cytochalasin D (cD) and sodium caprate (C10), in the absence and presence of the MLCK inhibitors, ML-9 and D PIK. Transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) and Papp of [14C]-mannitol or FITC-dextran 4000 (FD-4) were measured.
The aim of this study was to identify tissues where ovine herpesvirus 2 (OvHV-2) replication occurs in vivo. A reverse-transcriptase PCR targeting the OvHV-2 major capsid protein gene (ORF 25) was developed and the presence of transcripts used as an indicator of virus replication in naturally infected sheep, and cattle and bison with sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever (SA-MCF). ORF 25 transcripts were detected in 18 of 60 (30%) turbinate, trachea, and lung samples from five sheep experiencing a shedding episode; 12 of the 18 positive samples were turbinates.
