3D printing in palliative medicine: systematic review.

Background: Three-dimensional printing (3DP) enables the production of highly customised, cost-efficient devices in a relatively short time, which can be particularly valuable to clinicians treating patients with palliative care intent who are in need of timely and effective solutions in the management of their patients' specific needs, including the relief of distressing symptoms.

Method: Four online databases were searched for articles published by December 2020 that described studies using 3DP in palliative care. The fields of application, and the relevant clinical and technological data were extracted and analysed.

A 2-year Review of the Diagnostic Performance of Serum and Bronchoalveolar Lavage Galactomannan Testing in Lung Transplant Recipients in a National Heart and Lung Transplant Centre.

Background: The 2015 International Society for Heart and Lung Transplant (ISHLT) fungal guidelines recommend the use of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) galactomannan over serum galactomannan for the diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis (IA) in lung transplant (LTx) recipients, based on limited evidence. Galactomannan testing is costly.

Methods: A single-center, retrospective cohort study reviewing all 814 serum and BAL galactomannan samples received from 184 LTx recipients in our center between 2021 and 2022 and assessing their diagnostic performance in the diagnosis of IA.

Altered extracellular matrix and mechanotransduction gene expression in rat bone tissue following long-term estrogen deficiency.

Osteoporosis is primarily associated with bone loss, but changes in bone tissue matrix composition and osteocyte mechanotransduction have also been identified. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying these changes and their relation to bone loss are not fully understood. The objectives of this study were to (1) conduct comprehensive temporal gene expression analyses on cortical bone tissue from ovariectomized rats, with a specific focus on genes known to govern matrix degradation, matrix production, and mechanotransduction, and (2) correlate these findings with bone mass, trabecular and cortical microarchitecture, and mineral and matrix composition.

De-identification of medical images intended for research is a core requirement for data-sharing initiatives, particularly as the demand for data for artificial intelligence (AI) applications grows. The Center for Biomedical Informatics and Information Technology (CBIIT) of the US National Cancer Institute (NCI) convened a virtual workshop with the intent of summarizing the state of the art in de-identification technology and processes and exploring interesting aspects of the subject. This paper summarizes the highlights of the first day of the workshop, the recordings, and presentations of which are publicly available for review.

Diagnostic Accuracy of F-Prostate Specific Membrane Antigen (PSMA) PET/CT Radiotracers in Staging and Restaging of Patients With High-Risk Prostate Cancer or Biochemical Recurrence: An Overview of Reviews.

The aim of this overview was to consolidate existing evidence syntheses and provide a comprehensive overview of the evidence for F-prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET/CT in the staging of high-risk prostate cancer and restaging after biochemical recurrence. An overview of reviews was performed and reported in line with the preferred reporting items for overview of reviews (PRIOR) statement and synthesis without meta-analysis (SWiM) reporting guidelines. A comprehensive database and grey literature search were conducted up to July 18, 2023.

Trial participants' self-reported understanding of randomisation phrases in participation information leaflets can be high, but acceptability of some descriptions is low, especially those linked to gambling and luck.

Background: Evidence indicates that trial participants often struggle to understand participant information leaflets (PILs) for clinical trials, including the concept of randomisation. We analysed the language used to describe randomisation in PILs and determine the most understandable and acceptable description through public and participant feedback.

Methods: We collected 280 PILs/informed consent forms and one video animation from clinical research facilities/clinical trial units in Ireland and the UK.

Most research on sexual performance anxiety has focused on men's experiences and links to erectile functioning and premature ejaculation, with little research attention given to women's experiences or to relationship dynamics. At times, sexual performance anxiety has been examined in the context of dysfunction, but rarely as a focus in its own right. Study 1 asked 51 participants reporting sexual performance anxiety to describe the cognitive and affective components of their experiences, coping strategies, and perceived impact on their relationship using open-ended responses from online surveys.

Effects of post-curing duration on the mechanical properties of complex 3D printed geometrical parts.

This study aims to assess the efficacy of post-curing guidance supplied by 3D printing resin manufacturers. Current guidance applies generically to all geometries with the caveat that post-curing should be extended for 'large' or 'complex' geometries but specific guidance is not provided. Interest has been growing in the use of radiotracers targeting prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA), including the use of F-PSMA PET-CT, as part of the primary staging or restaging of prostate cancer. Preliminary scoping identified a number of relevant systematic reviews and meta-analyses; however, individually, these each appear to look at only part of the picture.

Background: The orthopaedic in-training examination (OITE) is a 275-question test for orthopaedic residents administered annually. As the field of orthopaedics changes, the OITE evolves its content. The incidence of hip preservation-related procedures has increased substantially over the past decade; nonetheless, an analysis of the trends of hip preservation questions on the OITE has not yet been performed.

The objective of this research was to investigate the influence of beef hot carcass weight (HCW) on consumer sensory attributes. Beef carcasses (n = 116) were selected based on the USDA quality grade and HCW. Lightweight (LW; 296-341 kg), middleweight (MW; 386-432 kg), or heavyweight (HW; 466-524 kg) carcasses with USDA Choice (LC) or USDA Select (SEL) quality grades were used in this study.

Over the course of an intimate relationship, individuals will frequently encounter potential alternative partners and may in fact develop romantic or sexual attraction to them. It is unclear when a more distal attraction to a potential alternative (a "crush") is associated with impaired relationship quality to one's primary relationship. A growing body of work indicates that crushes are common among those in established, ostensibly monogamous relationships.

Association Between Hypoglycemia and the Occurrence of Early Onset Sepsis in Premature Infants.

Background: We examined the association between hypoglycemia and the occurrence of early onset sepsis (EOS) in premature infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Methods: We included infants discharged from 358 NICUs between 1997 and 2020 with gestational age <34 weeks, ≥1 culture collected in the first 3 days of life, and ≥1 serum glucose value recorded on the day of or day prior to culture collection. We used multivariable logistic regression and inverse probability weighting (IPW) and constructed models for three definitions of hypoglycemia: American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), Pediatric Endocrine Society, and a definition based on neurodevelopmental studies.
