Measures of the size of various hand parts and their viewing distance when held at arm's length were made on one hundred and eighteen undergraduate students. A simple rule of thumb can be confirmed: Visual angle of the width of the thumb held at arm's length is about 2 deg. The thumbnail subtends about 1.

The possible heterogeneity of the agonist and glycine sites of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-complex was examined using receptor binding techniques. Binding of [3H]L-glutamate [( 3H]GLU) and [3H]glycine to synaptic membranes of cerebral and cerebellar cortices, and membranes of a granule cell preparation of rat cerebellum, was characterized. [3H]Glycine always labelled a single population of sites; densities of binding sites (Bmax) in cortical, cerebellar and "granule" membranes were 3.

Linear salpingotomy was performed on 16 patients using the CO2 laser laparoscopically directed. Median operating time was 60 minutes (range 40-100) and all patients were discharged on the first postoperative day. There were 4 patients in whom persistence of trophoblast activity was detected, 2 of whom were treated surgically and 2 by oral methotrexate therapy.

Of 141 women with twin pregnancies, 72 were randomly assigned to outpatient care and 69 to hospital admission between 26 and 30 weeks' gestation. There were no differences between the groups in the frequencies of major maternal complications in pregnancy and labour but more of those admitted to hospital than of the outpatient group had to be admitted after 30 weeks. There were no differences between the groups in the mean birthweights of the twins by birth order, or in their mean gestation at birth whether analysed by intention to treat or by the treatment given.

Vernier acuity has usually been tested with stimuli of the same contrast polarity (SC). This traditional vernier acuity was compared to that obtained with stimuli of opposite-contrast (OC) in which one target was brighter than the background and the other was darker. For both bar and dot targets vernier acuity with OC stimuli was about half as good as with SC stimuli.

Findings of numerous studies that have explored the smoking practices of nurses reveal a high incidence of smoking that is incongruent with the health beliefs of the profession. Nurses who smoke are less likely to teach or positively influence patients who smoke. They may even undermine health teaching efforts of other health professionals.

The regulation of the central sigma-binding site was investigated using both in vitro and in vivo manipulations in conjunction with radioligand binding. The displacement of the binding of R(+)-[3H]3-[3-hydroxyphenyl]-N-(1-propyl)piperidine [R(+)-[3H]3-PPP] to cortical homogenates by a range of drugs was consistent with the site labelled being a sigma-receptor. (+)-SKF 10,047, (-)-SKF 10,047, (+/-)-cyclazocine, phencyclidine, and dexoxadrol displaced R(+)-[3H]3-PPP with pseudo-Hill coefficients of less than 1.

Pregnancy occurred in 8 of 14 patients with the unilateral transfer of three or four oocytes at GIFT procedures. These results suggest that unilateral GIFT may be at least as successful as the bilateral approach. It would appear that unilateral GIFT rather than in vitro fertilization should be used for patients with one normal fallopian tube, and if the pregnancy rates with unilateral GIFT are substantiated, then this would be preferable to the bilateral approach, as operating time is shorter and there is less risk of trauma to the fallopian tubes at the time of gamete transfer.

This study describes the health practices of nursing students from several nursing programs in western New York. Findings from a sample of 1,081 female students who responded to a questionnaire showed considerable variability in the extent to which students engage in health-related practices. While the majority obtain six to eight hours of sleep per night, exercise regularly, and have annual dental and physical examinations, less than half those surveyed eat breakfast everyday, over three-quarters eat between meals, and less than one-half limit fat, salt, and sugar in their diets.

This study relates perceived dentist behaviors to anxiety reduction in patients during treatment, and to satisfaction with the dental visit. The sample consisted of 250 adult patients, 110 men and 140 women, at two outpatient hospital dental clinics. Immediately after treatment, patients were asked to respond to a list of 25 dentist behaviors thought to be associated with positive dentist-patient interaction.

The emergence of transvaginal ultrasound-guided oocyte retrieval provided an opportunity to review and improve the traditional transabdominal ultrasonic approach for follicular tracking in in vitro fertilisation (IVF). This technique requires a full bladder, which may cause extreme discomfort. Hence, to provide both effective and comfortable monitoring, we instituted a study comparing transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasonography, with regard to patient preference and follicular number, size and dominance, in patients undergoing IVF and gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT).

The Interval Scale of Anxiety Response (ISAR) is shown to be a valid and reliable instrument for measuring situation dental anxiety in adults. The ISAR demonstrates differences that are known or expected between various population subgroups. Thus, significantly higher scores, indicating greater levels of anxiety, are reported by women compared with men; by hospital clinic patients compared with private practice patients; by occasional compared with regular users of dental care; by those with lower educational levels; and by those patients undergoing exodontia compared with patients having other dental procedures.

The delivery of safe and nutritionally successful total parenteral nutrition (TPN), including intravenous lipid emulsion, to a pregnant woman with Crohn's disease and short bowel syndrome from conception to delivery is reported. Maternal nutritional status improved during the pregnancy. Fetal development was normal, and a healthy, full-term infant was delivered.

Suppression theory attributes the singleness of vision during binocular viewing to inconspicuous binocular rivalry. In two experiments, reaction time (RTs) for detection of a small molecular probe were measured while the eyes viewed identical ("fusion") or different (rivalry) stimuli. As expected, distributions of RTs obtained during binocular rivalry showed large positive skew, from trials in which detection was delayed because the probe was superimposed on the suppressed field.
