Comparison of machine classification algorithms for fibromyalgia: neuroimages versus self-report.

Unlabelled: Recent studies have posited that machine learning (ML) techniques accurately classify individuals with and without pain solely based on neuroimaging data. These studies claim that self-report is unreliable, making "objective" neuroimaging classification methods imperative. However, the relative performance of ML on neuroimaging and self-report data have not been compared.

Fibromyalgia patients have reduced hippocampal volume compared with healthy controls.

Objective: Fibromyalgia patients frequently report cognitive abnormalities. As the hippocampus plays an important role in learning and memory, we determined whether individuals with fibromyalgia had smaller hippocampal volume compared with healthy control participants.

Methods: T1-weighted structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were acquired from 40 female participants with fibromyalgia and 22 female healthy controls.

Effective connectivity predicts future placebo analgesic response: A dynamic causal modeling study of pain processing in healthy controls.

A better understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying pain processing and analgesia may aid in the development and personalization of effective treatments for chronic pain. Clarification of the neural predictors of individual variability in placebo analgesia (PA) could aid in this process. The present study examined whether the strength of effective connectivity (EC) among pain-related brain regions could predict future placebo analgesic response in healthy individuals.

Randomized, double-blind comparison of standard-dose vs. high-dose trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine in pediatric solid organ transplant patients.

Children who have undergone SOT mount a lower immune response after vaccination with TIV compared to healthy controls. HD or SD TIV in pediatric SOT was given to subjects 3-17 yr and at least six months post-transplant. Subjects were randomized 2:1 to receive either the HD (60 μg) or the SD (15 μg) TIV.

The 4th Schizophrenia International Research Society Conference, 5-9 April 2014, Florence, Italy: a summary of topics and trends.

The 4th Schizophrenia International Research Society Conference was held in Florence, Italy, April 5-9, 2014 and this year had as its emphasis, "Fostering Collaboration in Schizophrenia Research". Student travel awardees served as rapporteurs for each oral session, summarized the important contributions of each session and then each report was integrated into a final summary of data discussed at the entire conference by topic. It is hoped that by combining data from different presentations, patterns of interest will emerge and thus lead to new progress for the future.

Increased lymph node yield in colorectal cancer is not necessarily associated with a greater number of lymph node positive cancers.

The presence of lymph node metastasis is a key prognostic factor in colorectal cancer and lymph node yield is an important parameter in assessing the quality of histopathology reporting of colorectal cancer excision specimens. This study assesses the trend in lymph node evaluation over time in a single institution and the relationship with the identification of lymph node positive tumours. It compares the lymph node yield of a contemporary dataset compiled from the histopathology reports of 2178 patients who underwent surgery for primary colorectal cancer between 2005 and 2012 with that of a historic dataset compiled from the histopathology reports of 1038 patients who underwent surgery for colorectal cancer at 5 yearly intervals from 1975 to 2000.

Test-retest reliability of pain-related brain activity in healthy controls undergoing experimental thermal pain.

Unlabelled: Although functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has been proposed as a method to elucidate pain-related biomarkers, little information exists related to psychometric properties of fMRI findings. This knowledge is essential for potential translation of this technology to clinical settings. The purpose of this study was to assess the test-retest reliability of pain-related brain activity and how it compares to the reliability of self-report.

DSM-5 unspecified feeding and eating disorders in adolescents: what do they look like and are they clinically significant?

Objective: The recent DSM-5 categorization of eating disorders introduces a new category of eating disorders, Unspecified Feeding and Eating Disorders (UFED), where symptoms do not meet criteria for any other diagnostic category, but cause clinically significant distress or impairment. The aim of the current study was to explore what disorders in UFED might look like in an adolescent population.

Method: We examined a large cohort of adolescent female twins (N = 699) who were assessed on three occasions and who did not meet a DSM-5 eating disorder diagnosis but who reported threshold levels of either fasting and/or driven exercise (N = 33; 4.

Universal method for creating optically active nanostructures on layered materials.

The ability to form patterned surface nanostructures has revolutionized the miniaturization of electronics and led to the discovery of emergent behaviors unseen in macroscopic systems. However, the creation of such nanostructures typically requires multiple processing steps, a high level of technical expertise, and highly sophisticated equipment. In this work, we have discovered a simple method to create nanostructures with control size and positioning in a single processing step using a standard scanning electron microscope.

Examination of the difficulties in emotion regulation scale and its relation to disordered eating in a young female sample.

Objective: Difficulties with emotion regulation is considered an important maintaining factor of disordered eating. One of the most commonly used measures of this construct is the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS). The aim of this study was to explore the factor structure of this measure in young females and to examine its reliability and validity with respect to disordered eating.

Lack of detectable HIV-1 molecular evolution during suppressive antiretroviral therapy.

A better understanding of changes in HIV-1 population genetics with combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) is critical for designing eradication strategies. We therefore analyzed HIV-1 genetic variation and divergence in patients' plasma before cART, during suppression on cART, and after viral rebound. Single-genome sequences of plasma HIV-1 RNA were obtained from HIV-1 infected patients prior to cART (N = 14), during suppression on cART (N = 14) and/or after viral rebound following interruption of cART (N = 5).

Safety of high dose trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine in pediatric patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Background: Although children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) mount immune responses after vaccination with the trivalent influenza vaccine (TIV), these responses are lower compared to controls. Recently, a high dose (HD) TIV was found to increase the level of antibody response in elderly patients compared to the standard dose (SD) TIV. We hypothesized that the HD TIV would be well-tolerated and more immunogenic compared to the SD TIV in pediatric subjects with ALL.

Enhanced detection of nanostructures by scanning electron microscopy using insulating materials.

We report a simple method by which 1D conducting structures with sub-micron diameters can be detected in a scanning electron microscope at magnifications more than an order of magnitude less than would be expected for their size. This enhanced detection was possible under normal operating conditions using a standard secondary electron detector. The technique requires only that the 1D samples must be in good physical contact with an insulating material.

Empowerment or rhetoric? Investigating the role of NHS Foundation Trust governors in the governance of patient safety.

Objectives: Involving patients and the public in patient safety is seen as central to health reform internationally. In England, NHS Foundation Trusts are seen as one way to achieve inclusive governance by involving local communities. We analysed these arrangements by studying lay governor involvement in the formal governance structures to improve patient safety.

Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) deficiency presenting as a rash.

We report on the case of a 2-year-old girl recently diagnosed with Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) deficiency who originally presented in the neonatal period with a distinctive rash. At 11 weeks of age she developed seizures, she had acquired microcephaly and developmental delay. The rash deteriorated dramatically following commencement of phenobarbitone; both rash and seizures abated following empiric introduction of pyridoxine and folinic acid as treatment of possible vitamin responsive seizures.

The proteomics of colorectal cancer: identification of a protein signature associated with prognosis.

Colorectal cancer is one of the commonest types of cancer and there is requirement for the identification of prognostic biomarkers. In this study protein expression profiles have been established for colorectal cancer and normal colonic mucosa by proteomics using a combination of two dimensional gel electrophoresis with fresh frozen sections of paired Dukes B colorectal cancer and normal colorectal mucosa (n = 28), gel image analysis and high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Hierarchical cluster analysis and principal components analysis showed that the protein expression profiles of colorectal cancer and normal colonic mucosa clustered into distinct patterns of protein expression.

Histological grade of invasive carcinoma of the breast assessed on needle core biopsy - modifications to mitotic count assessment to improve agreement with surgical specimens.

Aims: Histological grade assessed on core biopsy of mammary invasive carcinomas tends to underestimate the grade in the excision specimen. A major factor is underestimation of mitoses. The aim of this study was to improve the assessment of mitoses in core biopsies.

Synthesis of freestanding HfO2 nanostructures.

Two new methods for synthesizing nanostructured HfO2 have been developed. The first method entails exposing HfTe2 powders to air. This simple process resulted in the formation of nanometer scale crystallites of HfO2.

Is saliva a valid substitute for plasma in pharmacokinetic studies of oxycodone and its metabolites in patients with cancer?

Purpose: Little is known about the pharmacokinetics (PKs) of oxycodone in patients with advanced cancer. There is considerable reluctance to subject these patients to non-essential tests including repeated venipuncture that has been necessary in PK studies to date. We investigated the possibility of using saliva sampling as a simple non-invasive test to investigate opioid PKs.
