Marine and freshwater mammalian predators and fish samples, retrieved from environmental specimen banks (ESBs), natural history museum (NHMs) and other scientific collections, were analysed by LIFE APEX partners for a wide range of legacy and emerging contaminants (2545 in total). Network analysis was used to visualize the chemical occurrence data and reveal the predominant chemical mixtures for the freshwater and marine environments. For this purpose, a web tool was created to explore these chemical mixtures in predator-prey pairs.

A State of the Art lecture titled "Syndemics in Women's Health: Poverty, Social Exclusion and Clustering of Thrombotic and Haemostasis Disorders" was presented at the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) Congress in 2023. Syndemics are characterized by the clustering of specific health conditions in vulnerable populations. Concentrations of 33 PFASs were determined in 20 Eurasian otters, sampled 2015-2019, along a transect away from a factory, which used PFOA in PTFE manufacture. Despite cessation of usage in 2012, PFOA concentrations remained high near the factory (>298 μg/kg ww <20 km from factory) and declined with increasing distance (<57 μg/kg ww >150 km away). Long-chain legacy PFASs dominated the ΣPFAS profile, particularly PFOS, PFOA, PFDA, and PFNA.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) remains the leading cause of maternal mortality in pregnancy and the postpartum period. In addition to the higher pregnancy-associated baseline VTE risk, there are several well-established risk factors that can further increase the risk of VTE. At present, a thorough interrogation of these risk factors remains our only tool for estimating which pregnant people may be at an increased risk of VTE, and thus potentially benefit from thromboprophylaxis.

Non-invasive sensory stimulation in the range of the brain's gamma rhythm (30-100 Hz) is emerging as a new potential therapeutic strategy for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here, we investigated the effect of repeated combined exposure to 40 Hz synchronized sound and light stimuli on hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP) in vivo in three rat models of early AD. We employed a very complete model of AD amyloidosis, amyloid precursor protein (APP)-overexpressing transgenic McGill-R-Thy1-APP rats at an early pre-plaque stage, systemic treatment of transgenic APP rats with corticosterone modelling certain environmental AD risk factors and, importantly, intracerebral injection of highly disease-relevant AD patient-derived synaptotoxic beta-amyloid and tau in wild-type animals.

Apex predators are good indicators of environmental pollution since they are relatively long-lived and their high trophic position and spatiotemporal exposure to chemicals provides insights into the persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) properties of chemicals. Although monitoring data from apex predators can considerably support chemicals' management, there is a lack of pan-European studies, and longer-term monitoring of chemicals in organisms from higher trophic levels. Background: Hypercoagulability and endothelial dysfunction are hallmarks of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and appear to predict disease severity. A high incidence of thrombosis despite thromboprophylaxis is reported in patients with moderate to severe COVID-19. Recent randomized clinical trials suggest that therapeutic-intensity heparin confers a survival benefit in moderate-severity COVID-19 compared to standard-intensity heparin, potentially by harnessing heparin-mediated endothelial-stabilizing and anti-inflammatory effects.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are ubiquitous environmental contaminants that have been linked to adverse health effects in wildlife and humans. Here, we report the presence of PFASs in Eurasian otters () in England and Wales and their association with anthropogenic sources. The following 15 compounds were analyzed: 10 perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs), 4 perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFSAs), and perfluorooctane sulfonamide, in livers of 50 otters which died between 2007 and 2009.
