Background: Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) is an idiopathic rheumatic inflammatory disease that is characterised by inflammation and skin fibrosis. Type I interferon is significantly elevated in the disease.

Objective: The objective of this study is to determine the role of the TCA cycle metabolite fumarate in SSc.

Maternal depression has been linked with increased risk of childhood obesity. Furthermore, maternal negative affectivity in early childhood has been associated with food fussiness. We explored the relationship between longitudinal maternal well-being mid-pregnancy, at 2 years and 5 years postpartum and children's appetitive traits at 5 years of age.

Background: Physical activity (PA) is often the cornerstone in risk-reduction interventions for the prevention and treatment of many chronic health conditions. PA interventions are inherently multi-dimensional and complex in nature. Thus, study designs used in the evaluation of PA interventions must be adaptive to intervention components and individual capacities.

Introduction: Loneliness and physical inactivity are issues that affect both young people and older adults. This can have negative health outcomes and well as high costs on health services. Physical activity can positively influence both physical and psychosocial health outcomes, however enjoyment is necessary for adherence.

Recent studies have revealed a structural role for DNA ligase 4 (Lig4) in the maintenance of a repair complex during non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) of DNA double-strand breaks. In cultured cell lines, catalytically inactive Lig4 can partially alleviate the severe DNA repair phenotypes observed in cells lacking Lig4. To study the structural role of Lig4 in vivo, a mouse strain harboring a point mutation to Lig4's catalytic site was generated.

Climate change is the greatest threat to human existence. Currently it impacts breast cancer care by disrupting treatment, by food poverty and economic hardship and through fossil fuel pollution which increases breast cancer incidence. These impacts are greatest in those already experiencing deprivation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the experiences of women with gestational diabetes (GDM) in Ireland, emphasizing the need for better education and support before and after pregnancy.
  • The survey found that most respondents lacked awareness of their risk for type 2 diabetes, and only a small percentage felt they had enough time with healthcare professionals to discuss GDM-related concerns.
  • Many women expressed a strong desire for more postpartum information on healthy eating and weight management, indicating a gap in the healthcare messaging they received.

Introduction: Although treatment advances have improved survival rates for patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC), patient expressed needs have not been evaluated in Ireland to date.

Methods: A 76 item questionnaire was designed by the lead author and a cohort of 41 other MBC patients in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. The online survey was publicised nationally on all media platforms.

Background: Latch On's objective was to achieve improved breastfeeding rates in women with raised body mass indices using a multicomponent breastfeeding support intervention.

Methods: A hybrid type 1 implementation-effectiveness trial with mixed-methods process and health economics analyses were conducted. Data collection included stakeholder questionnaires, interviews, focus groups, fidelity data, participant and health system costs.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) poses significant health concerns for women and their offspring, with implications that extend beyond pregnancy. While GDM often resolves postpartum, a diagnosis of GDM confers a greater risk of future type 2 diabetes (T2D) and other chronic illnesses. Furthermore, the intergenerational impact of GDM predisposes offspring to increased chronic disease risk.

Background: The role of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) expands but affordable and reproducible prognostic biomarkers are needed. We investigated the association between baseline and 3-month absolute lymphocyte count (ALC) and survival for patients on ICI.

Methods: A retrospective study investigated patients who received ICI July 2014-August 2019.

Background: Climate change is a threat to human health; equally health care is a threat to climate change as it accounts for 4% of greenhouse gas emissions and 30% of the world's electronically stored data. 350,000 international trials are registered on ClinicalTrials.gov with ~27·5 million tonnes of emissions (equivalent to half of annual Danish emissions).

Article Synopsis
  • Cutaneous wound healing is a complex and tightly regulated process involving various cell types; disruptions can lead to issues like non-healing wounds or excessive scarring.
  • Cellular senescence, which is a state where cells stop dividing, can aid in acute wound healing by facilitating tissue restoration but may contribute to chronic wounds that don’t heal or cause fibrosis.
  • This review seeks to clarify the dual role of senescence in wound healing, exploring how it can either promote or hinder the process depending on whether the context is acute or chronic, and looks into strategies for improving healing outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how oral sensory hypersensitivity and social-emotional responses in typically developing preteen children relate to their eating behaviors, especially focusing on traits like fussy eating and desire to drink.
  • - Using data from 130 mother-child pairs, researchers employed established sensory profile assessments and a children's eating behavior questionnaire to analyze the connections between child and maternal sensory processing traits.
  • - Results showed that children with higher oral sensory processing sensitivity often exhibited increased food fussiness and a greater desire to drink, while maternal sensory profiles revealed significant correlations with their children's sensory traits, indicating a shared sensory processing influence.

Around 55 million people worldwide live with dementia, and more are expected due to population ageing. We aimed to investigate associations between healthy diet and mild cognitive impairment and dementia in 1753 older adults aged 60-64 from the PATH (Personality and Total Health Through Life Cohort) study. Healthy diet was defined by the Mediterranean-DASH diet Intervention for Neurological Delay (MIND) and two dietary guideline quality scores (Dietary Guideline Index (DGI) and Index Diet Quality (IDQ)), which were calculated from baseline FFQ.

Correlates of Protection (CoP) are biomarkers above a defined threshold that can replace clinical outcomes as primary endpoints, predicting vaccine effectiveness to support the approval of new vaccines or follow up studies. In the context of COVID-19 vaccination, CoPs can help address challenges such as demonstrating vaccine effectiveness in special populations, against emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants or determining the durability of vaccine-elicited immunity. While anti-spike IgG titres and viral neutralising capacity have been characterised as CoPs for COVID-19 vaccination, the contribution of other components of the humoral immune response to immediate and long-term protective immunity is less well characterised.

Background And Purpose: Arts-based interventions are an emerging area of interest in health research for older adults. Music and Movement for Health (MMH) is one such systematically developed interdisciplinary arts-based intervention designed to enhance health and wellbeing of older adults. The objective of this qualitative study was to explore the opinions and experiences of participants, facilitators, and community stakeholders of the MMH intervention.

Article Synopsis
  • Clinical trials, essential for healthcare, also significantly contribute to climate change; researchers have developed a method to calculate their carbon footprint and applied it to 10 UK and international trials.
  • Data on trial activities was collected from 10 trial units, evaluated for emission sources, and feedback was gathered on the carbon footprint calculation process.
  • The carbon footprints of the trials varied widely, highlighting key areas for emissions reduction, with suggestions to incorporate carbon footprint considerations during the trial design phase.

Purpose: The treatment landscape of Oestrogen receptor-positive (ER-positive) breast cancer is evolving, with declining chemotherapy use as a result of Oncotype DX Breast Recurrence Score® testing. Results from the SWOG S1007 RxPONDER trial suggest that adjuvant chemotherapy may benefit some premenopausal women with ER-positive, HER2-negative disease with 1-3 positive lymph nodes (N1), and a Recurrence Score® (RS) of ≤ 25. Postmenopausal women with similar characteristics did not benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy.
