Objective: To examine neuropsychological characteristic differences between typical and atypical language dominance in adult persons with epilepsy (PWE) and mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS), including exploring the impact of selected clinical variables on detection of atypical language and neuropsychological performance.

Methods: Adults with intractable epilepsy and MTS ( = 39) underwent comprehensive, pre-surgical evaluation including fMRI and neuropsychological assessment. Participants with concordant lateralization of MTS and seizure onset were included.

Introduction: Dementia affects one in three older adults over age 85 and individuals with dementia constitute the fastest growing population of patients entering hospice care. While cognitive impairment is the hallmark of dementia, behavioral symptoms are reported in nearly all patients with advanced dementia, contributing to both the complexity of end-of-life care and caregiver burden.

Methods: This qualitative study involved semi-structured interviews with prescribing hospice clinicians and caregivers of patients living with dementia who previously received hospice services.

Mercury (Hg) researchers have made progress in understanding atmospheric Hg, especially with respect to oxidized Hg (Hg) that can represent 2 to 20% of Hg in the atmosphere. Knowledge developed over the past ∼10 years has pointed to existing challenges with current methods for measuring atmospheric Hg concentrations and the chemical composition of Hg compounds. AXL+ Siglec-6+ dendritic cells (ASDC) are novel myeloid DCs which can be subdivided into CD11c+ and CD123+ expressing subsets. We showed for the first time that these two ASDC subsets are present in inflamed human anogenital tissues where HIV transmission occurs. Their presence in inflamed tissues was supported by single cell RNA analysis of public databases of such tissues including psoriasis diseased skin and colorectal cancer.

Most previous measurements of oxidized mercury were collected using a method now known to be biased low. In this study, a dual-channel system with an oxidized mercury detection limit of 6-12 pg m was deployed alongside a permeation tube-based automated calibrator at a mountain top site in Steamboat Springs Colorado, USA, in 2021 and 2022. Permeation tubes containing elemental mercury and mercury halides were characterized via an International System of Units (SI)-traceable gravimetric method and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry before deployment in the calibrator.

We introduce a 35-marker imaging mass cytometry (IMC) panel for a detailed examination of immune cell populations and HIV RNA in formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) human intestinal tissue. The panel has broad cell type coverage and particularly excels in delineating subsets of mononuclear phagocytes and T cells. Markers for key tissue structures are included, enabling identification of epithelium, blood vessels, lymphatics, and musculature.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) centers transitioned to telemedicine during the spring 2020 peak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Although HIV infection inhibits interferon responses in its target cells in vitro, interferon signatures can be detected in vivo soon after sexual transmission, mainly attributed to plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs). Efficient isolation of genetically modified cells that are phenotypically indistinguishable from the unmodified cells remains a major technical barrier for the broader utilization of CRISPR/Cas9. Here, we report a novel enrichment approach to select the genome engineered cells by co-targeting a genomically integrated GFP gene along with the endogenous gene of interest (GOI). Marek's disease (MD), caused by MD herpesvirus (MDV), is an economically important disease in chickens.
