Background: Regular exercise can mitigate side effects of cancer treatment. However, only a small proportion of adults with cancer meet exercise guidelines, and older adults (> 65 years) are underrepresented in cancer rehabilitation research. Peer support facilitates health-promoting behaviours in general populations, but interventions merging exercise and peer support for older adults with cancer are not examined.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the natural progression of exergaming (video games that also involve physical activity) among 592 young adults over 12-13 years, tracking their participation at four time points.
  • It identified that only a small percentage of participants (3%) maintained consistent exergaming from the beginning to the end of the study, with most engaging in light to moderate-intensity activities.
  • Factors such as external pressure to exercise and changes in social circles were linked to lower chances of sustained exergaming, highlighting the need for strategies to encourage long-term engagement in this activity.

Epithelial cancers disrupt tissue architecture and are often driven by mutations in genes that normally play important roles in epithelial morphogenesis. The intrahepatic biliary system is an epithelial tubular network that forms within the developing liver via the initiation and expansion of apical lumens. Intrahepatic biliary tumors are often driven by different types of mutations in the FGFR2 receptor tyrosine kinase which plays important roles in epithelial morphogenesis in other developmental settings.

As global change processes modify the extent and functions of terrestrial-aquatic interfaces, the variability of critical and dynamic transitional zones between wetlands and uplands increases. However, it is still unclear how fluctuating water levels at these dynamic boundaries alter groundwater biogeochemical cycling. Here, we used high-temporal resolution data along gradients from wetlands to uplands and during fluctuating water levels at freshwater coastal areas to capture spatiotemporal patterns of groundwater redox potential ().

The objective of this study was to determine if U sediment concentrations in a U-contaminated wetland located within the Savannah River Site, South Carolina, were greater in the rhizosphere than in the nonrhizosphere. U concentrations were as much as 1100% greater in the rhizosphere than in the nonrhizosphere fractions; however and importantly, not all paired samples followed this trend. Iron (but not C, N, or S) concentrations were significantly enriched in the rhizosphere.

Bentonite is a promising buffer material for constructing spent nuclear fuel (SNF) repositories. However, indigenous microbes in bentonite can be introduced to the repository and subsequent sealing of the repository develops anoxic conditions over time which may stimulate fermentation and anaerobic respiration, possibly affecting bentonite structure and SNF repository stability. Moreover, the microbial activity in the bentonite can be impacted by the heat generated from radionuclides decay.

Antimony (Sb), a non-essential metalloid, can be released into the environment through various industrial activities. Sb(III) is considered more toxic than Sb(V), but Sb(III) can be immobilized through the precipitation of insoluble SbS or SbO. In the subsurface, Sb redox chemistry is largely controlled by microorganisms; however, the exact mechanisms of Sb(V) reduction to Sb(III) are still unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • Microbial Fe(III) reduction plays a crucial role in the iron cycle, with its effectiveness varying based on the type and crystallinity of Fe(III) (hydr)oxides.
  • In a 10-month study using microcosm reactors, researchers observed that different sources of microbial communities altered their composition when interacting with various Fe(III) minerals (lepidocrocite, goethite, hematite).
  • Lepidocrocite showed a higher reduction rate compared to goethite and hematite, and distinct microbial taxa emerged based on the mineral type, highlighting the diversity of Fe(III)-reducing microbes across various natural settings.

Introduction: Although body weight has been positioned as a strong predictor of physical and mental health, positive and negative body-related psychosocial factors may also be important. Further, both theoretical tenets and empirical evidence suggest that these associations may differ by gender. Our objectives were to examine the associations between body-related self-conscious emotions (body shame, body authentic pride) and physical and mental health in young adults, and to identify potential differences in these associations by gender.
